Summary
Aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) is a rare form of stroke that kills at least 30% of sufferers within 1 month. Outcome can be improved through quickly receiving medical care but many people do not and this likely contributes to the poor outcomes. The REDucing Delays In Subarachnoid Haemorrhage (REDDISH) study will look at cases of aSAH across Tasmanian and Victoria so that we can understand the factors that contribute to delays in treatment and ultimately improve outcomes.
Discovery of Novel Respiratory Viruses Causing Influenza-Like Illness in Healthy Australian Adults Aged 18 to 64 Years. This work will inform our understanding of the causes of acute respiratory illnesses in Australia at the present time by looking for both known and previously undiscovered respiratory viruses. Increasing the knowledge base regarding causes of disease will have downstream relevance for health policy planners seeking to assess the burden of disease due to different causes. Summary
Indigenous Australians not only suffer from a high burden of kidney disease, but also have poorer disease outcomes compared to non-Indigenous Australians. My research program is focused on improving outcomes for Indigenous Australians with kidney disease by using existing health care data to work out where and why their outcomes are poor within the health care system. It will enable us to identify ways to improve health care systems for Indigenous Australians.
The effect of acquiring a disability in adulthood. This project aims to analyse the effect the acquisition of a disability in adulthood has on subsequent socio-economic circumstances (employment, housing, education, income, social capital, wealth) and wellbeing. Researchers from epidemiology, econometrics and statistics will use longitudinal data to model the patterns of disability and subsequent socio-economic and health circumstances over time. This community-based trial in rural Bangladesh will determine if iron/folic acid supplementation commencing in the first trimester of pregnancy significantly reduces newborn deaths, and whether this approach is cost-effective. This trial has the potential to inform international public health policy about the importance of starting antenatal iron/folic acid supplementation early to improve neonatal survival, and to help countries reach their child survival Millennium Development Goal
