Child & Adolescent Victimisation: Prevalence & Predictors in Australia. This is a study to determine the rate and predictors of child and adolescent experiences of victimisation in an Australian population based sample.
This study will address widespread concerns about the experiences of violence by Australian children. No previous population based studies have addressed this issue.

This is a study to determine the rate and predictors of child and adolescent experiences of victimisation in an Australian population based sample.
This study will address widespread concerns about the experiences of violence by Australian children. No previous population based studies have addressed this issue.
Expected outcomes are published papers in major journals, policy relevant data provided to Commonwealth and State governments as well as relevant NGOs.
The consequences of child and adolescent victimisation are substantial. This study will point to both the causes and prioritise strategies to reduce the level of violence experienced by children.

Research evidence in the not-for-profit sector and consumer-driven change. This project has three aims: first, to further build research literacy within the not-for-profit human service sector; second, to contribute new knowledge about how human service sector clients can shape the nature of the services they rely upon; and third, develop a framework for human service clients, human service practitioners, and government stakeholders to more actively and collaboratively engage in social policy de ....Research evidence in the not-for-profit sector and consumer-driven change. This project has three aims: first, to further build research literacy within the not-for-profit human service sector; second, to contribute new knowledge about how human service sector clients can shape the nature of the services they rely upon; and third, develop a framework for human service clients, human service practitioners, and government stakeholders to more actively and collaboratively engage in social policy development. The project expects to generate new knowledge to underpin consumer led and transformations in the human service sector. Expected outcomes of the project include a greater understanding of how not-for-profit organisations can bring together their clients and governments to collaboratively solve social problems. This project aims to develop a novel framework that uses big data from satellites to assess the impacts of droughts and water extraction on groundwater resources in Australia, currently poorly understood and difficult to monitor. This project expects to generate new insights into the mechanisms driving changes in groundwater availability and identify risks from sustained groundwater extraction. Expected outcomes include a new national capability to assess and monitor groundwater resources from space and providing data for government, farmers, communities and traditional owners to better prepare for future droughts, increase disaster preparedness, and sustainably manage groundwater resources in a changing climate.Read moreRead less

Smoke from bushfires transported by gravity currents, and known to occur nationwide, caused the shutdown of businesses, education and events in Canberra in 2019. Recent scientific investigations have shown that the speed of propagation and concentration of smoke in these three-dimensional gravity currents have a long term ‘memory’ of their initial configuration. In this project, high-fidelity computational and experimental techniques will be used to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of gravity current entrainment and propagation. This knowledge will set a strong foundation to improve operational forecasts of smoke transport that will allow government agencies to better respond to the negative impact of these complicated flows.Read moreRead less
Reducing the harms associated with conscientious objection to abortion. This project aims to critically evaluate the regulation of conscientious objection to abortion. A range of state-based laws regulate this practice in Australia, and there is evidence that all result in inequitable access, harms to women and lack clarity for providers. This project aims to critically evaluate the regulation of conscientious objection to abortion. A range of state-based laws regulate this practice in Australia, and there is evidence that all result in inequitable access, harms to women and lack clarity for providers. The project will critically evaluate the legal and regulatory options for managing conscientious objection and interview conscientious objectors to develop a conceptual model to explain their practices. A participatory process with experts will identify the optimal model for regulation and how to translate the model to practice. Expected outcomes are world first evidence on practice, progress towards effective regulation, and benefits will be reduced conflict and harms.Read moreRead less

This project will investigate the consequences of parental detention for children living in the Australian community. It will use qualitative sociological methods to document and theorise children’s experiences of a parent’s detention, with a focus on the factors that shape children’s social, emotional and material wellbeing in these situations. Expected outcomes include new knowledge concerning the lives and welfare of these potentially vulnerable children, as well as evidence-based insights regarding the social supports they need to thrive. The project will deliver internationally relevant recommendations to help policymakers and service providers improve the lives of children and families navigating the incarceration of a parent.Read moreRead less

Although the provision of social services in multicultural societies is one of the major factors that affect immigrants’ integration experiences, it surprisingly remains under-researched. This project will systematically map the provision and impact of different service-delivery modes in three areas of interest to migrant groups - health, social and employment services. By using mixed-methods design, the project will assess the experiences and impact of the mainstreaming of social services on social inclusion, citizenship and human rights among migrant communities. Outcomes will include robust empirical evidence to plan policies and improve social inclusion of migrant communities through the effective provision of social services.Read moreRead less

In the process, new materials are being introduced whose potential impacts need to be understood before they are widely used. This project pioneers investigations into the rate and extent of biodegradation of biodegradable plastics in aquatic and soil environments and the associated ecotoxicology of this process. In particular, it aims to quantify the extent to which the surfaces of these materials accumulate environmental pollutants via adsorption and other mechanisms. The outcomes will include conceptual models of biodegradation across environments, including lifetimes and likely impacts, critical information for framing a sustainable plastics industry.Read moreRead less

This project aims to study coronial death investigations of fatal road crashes in Australia using public health and road safety theoretical frameworks. Fatal road crashes are sudden, unexpected and violent. Each fatality has a lasting effect resulting in immeasurable emotional costs and a financial burden in excess of $3.8 billion per year. Intended outcomes will contribute to understanding of fatal road crashes including pre-crash social factors (e.g. alcohol/drug use and dependence, unemployment, age), the use and effect of coronial recommendations on road safety policy and practice, and preventing deaths on Australian roads.Read moreRead less

This project will develop the mathematical foundations for discovery and analysis of iterative methods for optimisation problems in distributed computing systems. Most methods in distributed optimisation were not designed for distributed computing, rather they were adapted for purpose post-hoc. By building on recent advances in monotone operator splitting, this project expects to develop a mathematical theory for decentralised optimisation algorithms specially designed for distributed systems. The framework is expected to produce a suite of algorithms, each customised to exploit a specific network configuration. The project will provide significant benefits in distributed machine learning applications such as federated learning.Read moreRead less
