Hence, institutions are invariably a key part of the solutions. GovNet unites three ARC Centres, two existing networks (RegNet, ANZSOG) and several other dynamic centres to create an interdisciplinary network of ethicists, lawyers, political scientists, economists and historians. Despite western emphasis on individuals, we live our lives largely in, and through, institutions. Institutions and their governance are generally part of our most pressing problems (including those relating to national research priorities): institutions are almost invariably a key part of the solution.

This project builds on two ARC centres (CAPPE, KCELJAG) established following our last SRI networking grant (?Applied Ethics and Legal Theory?). Australia has been committed to a rules-based international system since the foundation of the UN and, while recently wavering in practice has remained formally supportive of international law. This is not just a matter of values. As a major trading nation and a middle power, Australia prosperity and security would benefit from a more rules-based international order. Moral vitalism: understanding the foundations of righteous violence within everyday secular thought. This research will investigate the psychological foundations of righteous violence and extremist thinking within everyday secular cognition. Focusing on the tendency to view good and evil as spiritual forces, the project will provide insight into new forms of everyday moral cognition while also uncovering factors that drive the cycle of terrorism.
Constructing Building Integrity: Raising standards through professionalism. This project aims to investigate the role of professions in rebuilding trust in residential building construction in Australia. In the wake of expensive and life-threatening building defects, this project expects to generate new knowledge about the functioning of individual professionals, professionals employed in multi-profession organisations, and professionals’ interaction with their institutional environment. This project aims to investigate the role of professions in rebuilding trust in residential building construction in Australia. Indonesia is recognised as a leading producer of moderate Muslim scholarships, reconciling Islam to modern, pluralistic political life, but little is understood of how cosmopolitan values permeate everyday religious practice. This project focuses on an emergent arena of Indonesian Muslim communication, celebrity preaching, to determine how 'modern' modes of religiosity are being promoted ....Modernising Islam through Indonesia's New Media: Celebrity Preachers and the Shaping of Cosmopolitan Values. Conceiving and Implementing National Integrity Systems Assessments (NISA). Integrity and corruption are conceptually linked opposites. Integrity systems (or 'ethics regimes') are the most powerful tools for dealing with corruption. They involve a range of institutions, law, procedures, practices and attitudes which encourage integrity and discourage/sanction its absence among public servants and those who might wish to corrupt them.
