Summary
In inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and lupus, white blood cells accumulate in organs and cause injury. The focus of this project is to understand how white blood cells leave the bloodstream and enter tissues. In particular, this project examines their contribution to inflammatory diseases of the kidney. By understanding this process in greater detail, we may be able to design more specific therapies to combat these conditions.

Summary
I am an internationally recognized expert in the field of lymphocyte biology. My work has shed light on antibody production, T cell responses and immune pathology. Specifically, I have identified molecular regulators that link antigen recognition, lymphocyte population expansion, cellular metabolism and effector function. My ongoing work focusses on the development and function of several critically important cell types, including tissue resident lymphocytes and regulatory T cells.

Impaired cell death (apoptosis) is now recognized as an important step towards cancer and a major barrier to effective therapy. The discoveries on apoptosis by Professor Jerry Adams and colleagues have galvanized the search for drugs that engage the cell’s apoptotic machinery as a new way to treat cancer. Relaxin family peptides are small proteins that have numerous essential biological roles in the vascular system, brain and gut. The hormone relaxin is currently in Phase III clinical trials to treat heart failure and the other peptides show great potential as drugs to treat diseases including mental illnesses and obesity. My research focuses on developing drugs targeting the receptors for these important peptide systems and understanding how these drugs can be best used therapeutically

Summary
Vaccines require adjuvants to be effective. Despite decades of research there is only one adjuvant approved for broad use in humans. Based on our prior findings I will engage new principles in nanotechnology, and deepen understanding of immune imprinting in various organs of the body including the lung, to develop 2nd generation broadly useful nanoadjuvants able to effectively treat cancer and malaria.
