    Tissue Engineering Skeletal Muscle – An Important Link In The Neuro-prosthetic Interface Of Bionic Limbs.

    Summary
    Limb loss after tumour, trauma, disease or degeneration is a major cause of disability. Use of a patient’s own nerve signals may offer an intuitive method for controlling a robotic limb to regain independence. Delicate nerves are damaged by the electrodes required for recording nerve signals, but muscles tolerate electrodes well. This project aims to create an artificial muscle construct as a bridge between nerve signals and recording electrodes to enable patient control of robotic limbs.

    Re-establishing functional connections between neurons and muscle is an important step in the recovery process after neuromuscular injury or surgery. In order to study the connection forming process in isolation a biological model of nerve muscle connection formation is required. This study aims to buid a biological model consisting of neurons and muscles in a three dimensional environment and to assess the quality of the functional connections that develop.

    Early-onset knee osteoarthritis (OA) imparts a considerable burden on younger adults, by restricting physical activity, quality-of-life and work capacity. Treatment options for younger adults with early-onset OA are limited. I will investigate the immediate and medium-term effects of a commercially available brace on symptoms and physical function in people with early-onset knee OA. If beneficial, the brace may have capacity to improve the impact of early-onset knee OA in younger Australians.

    Outcomes Of The Arterial Switch Operation: A Multi-centre Study

    The arterial switch operation is the surgery of choice for children born with transposition of the great arteries, a congenital heart defect where the main two vessels of the heart arise from wrong pumping chambers of the heart. There are very few studies looking at adults after this operation. We aim to study all patients who have had an arterial switch. The results of this study will further increase our knowledge of the long term consequences of having the arterial switch operation.

    Safety And Quality Of Life Of Peri-operative Transdermal Estradiol Continuation During Gender Affirmation Surgery In Transgender Women: A Randomised Placebo-controlled Trial

    Despite no clear evidence, transgender women are told to stop their feminising estrogen treatment several weeks before gender surgery, but this causes severe 'menopausal symptoms' with hot flushes, depression and distress compounding an already stressful preparation for and recovery from major surgery. This trial will establish if continuing estrogen gel around the time of surgery is safe and effective at improving 'menopausal symptoms'.

    The Fontan procedure is the last of a series of operations offered to children born with hearts with a single pumping chamber. Without this procedure these children would die, however, with this procedure their long-term expectations are still uncertain. This study will investigate the long-term outcomes of the Australian and New Zealand Fontan population and how these outcomes can be improved.

    My research will use economics to help improve surgery outcomes. Clinical and policy recommendations in surgery often come from a relatively low evidence base. I will make use of detailed data registries of previous recipients of hip and knee surgery (St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne) and Fontan heart surgery (Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne) to develop advanced economic models of surgery outcomes. My aim is to use these models to improve real-world health policies in surgery.

    The incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rising in parallel with the unfolding obesity crisis, and it will become the most common cause of liver failure in the near future. Bariatric surgery has established benefits in weight loss and type II diabetes remission. Its role in NAFLD is still uncertain. We will explore the role of bariatric surgery in the treatment of NAFLD, as well as investigate cellular and biomolecular changes that occur with weight loss.

    Patients undergoing cardiac surgery often need a fluid bolus which is a volume of fluid given over a short period of time to improve their circulation. This intervention is essential as poor circulation may cause damage to important organs in the body such as the heart, lungs and kidneys. This study will allow doctors to make informed decisions about which type of fluid is better for their patients having cardiac surgery in the future.
