The research aims to develop generic tools for automated audio segmentation, classification, identification and search, with lowest possible computational complexity and highest accuracy and speed. The tools will be applicable to audio archive management, search of audio material over WWW and personal archives of music and audio-assisted video analysis. The industry will use the tools for automated broadcast verification and identification for copyright surveillance and calculation of royalty payments, aiming to penetrate both Australian and overseas markets. The area of real-time audio scene analysis is in its infancy and the research aims to make significant contributions to this area.Read moreRead less
Developing Reliable Bio-Crypto Features for Mobile Template Protection. Cost of identity theft crimes were at multi-million dollars in Australia in 2007. Technically this is due to the fact that conventional personal identification number and token based security mechanisms cannot identify genuine users. Biometric fingerprint security systems emerge as a promising solution. However protection of the mobile embedded fingerprint template itself is an unresolved problem. The project aims to develop new ways designing bio-cryptosystems that provide strong security strength. The project will bring new body of knowledge into this field and place Australia in the forefront of this research, and also result in strengthened security of IT infrastructure and systems for industries.Read moreRead less
Content-based image retrieval using interactive feedback. Storage and retrieval of visual information plays an important role in multimedia systems. We aim to develop a method to retrieve images and visual information from multimedia databases and multimedia systems. The method will go beyond simple similarity search to retrieval data on knowledge by accommodating knowledge acquisition and sequential learning techniques, and will be able to handle complex queries with partial information. We aim to develop a method to retrieve images and visual information from multimedia databases and multimedia systems. The method will go beyond simple similarity search to retrieval data on knowledge by accommodating knowledge acquisition and sequential learning techniques, and will be able to handle complex queries with partial information. The technology developed will find many applications in the multimedia area such as education, medical imaging, desktop publishing, advertising, business presentation, and engineering design.Read moreRead less
A scheme and a formal language for interactive video. Video has been increasingly used in many fields and plays an important role in our daily life. Most traditional video players and video formats only provide linear interaction, such as play, fast forward, fast backward or jump to a certain frame of a video stream indicated by a sequence or time on a random access device. Most traditional video players and video formats only provide linear interaction, such as play, fast forward, fast backward or jump to a certain frame of a video stream indicated by a sequence or time on a random access device. This project aims at enabling a hyperlink type of interactions for video data through the development of video interaction mark-up language (VIML). It can find many applications in education, marketing, web presentation and digital TV.Read moreRead less

Document Classification has an enormous relevance in an era where large amounts of textual information is available. Document Classification is based on statistical and machine learning techniques that model documents represented as points in a multidimensional space. The Computer Engineering Laboratory (CEL) has ongoing projects using neural networks and other techniques for document classification. We are developing a development environment for large classification tasks, and Prof. Lee¡¯s work will focus in managing large amounts of data for them. Using his experience in data compression, databases and web applications, he will produce a set of tools for handling Gigabytes of textual data in our classification environment.Read moreRead less

This projects aims to consider fundamental issues in implementing a prototype quality information retrieval system from the world wide web. These issues include: retrieval of relevant pages to a given topic using a focussed crawler; text categorisation of the retrieved web pages; quality selection criteria with the formulation of a quality index to determine quality of retrieved pages, and user interface design to obtain relevance feedback. The outcome will be a prototype system useful to business and industry though to guide our thinking we will use issues in constructing a quality digital library collection as a sounding board.
