Diamond is already seen as the front-runner for practical, high temperature, quantum information processing tasks. This proposal places the technological spotlight firmly on diamond and partnering with Hewlett-Packard will ensure that the promise of diamond is explored in an industrially relevant (rather than just academic) fashion. HP brings enormous experience and infrastructure, as well as a proven path to prototype and market for successful technologies. This proposal is an outstanding opportunity to increase the relevance of Australian academic research, increase the training and employment options for Australian graduates, and to expand Australian funding opportunities by improving access to US research funds.Read moreRead less
Development and Testing of Novel Contrast Agents for Diagnostic Imaging. Demand for diagnostic imaging in the Australian healthcare system is growing at over 5% per annum. To facilitate imaging, Australia imports radiographic contrast media costing in excess of $50 million every year. Existing iodine-based agents are not ideal for X-ray absorption in current CT scanners and also cause moderate to severe allergic reaction in around 5% of all patients, sometimes with fatal results. New radiograph ....Development and Testing of Novel Contrast Agents for Diagnostic Imaging. New radiographic media, which give enhanced contrast and provide greater patient comfort and safety are essential. Even a small fraction of the international market would generate millions of dollars in income, support growth and expertise in Imaging Technologies, and provide new markets for Australian mining of rare earth and bismuth metals.Read moreRead less

Stabilisation of Titania Pigment Slurries During Processing. This project aims to improve the stabilisation properties of titania pigment slurries during production. Current polyphosphate dispersants used by Tiwest are unstable under processing conditions. Tailored, robust dispersing reagents will therefore be investigated in order to provide improved stabilisation of pigments during processing. Enhanced understanding of the dispersing reagents interaction with the titania pigment surface and the subsequent stability of the pigment will allow advances in processing and consequently improved final products. The potential growth in market share, by improved product performance, is in excess of $50M pa.Read moreRead less
Low viscosity, high ionic conductivity ionic liquids for lithium metal batteries. Current consumer electronic devices rely on lithium-ion batteries to provide a high energy density power source. Current consumer electronic devices rely on lithium-ion batteries to provide a high energy density power source. There are growing safety concerns about the electrolytes in these devices after recent incidents involving fires in mobile phones. Recent advances in ionic liquids (ILs) have seen the development of new electrolytes for such devices, with enhanced physical properties that offer major safety advantages. However, the viscosity of these materials currently limit their capabilities. New IL materials to be developed in this project will pave the way for the development of safer devices and new sustainable energy industries in Australia.Read moreRead less
The rational development of improved pre-conditioning agents for the removal of oil contamination from wildlife and rocky foreshore. Wildlife and ecological resources such as Phillip Island's Little Penguin colony (with 500,000 visitors p.a.) and its environment are at the heart of Australia's ecotourism industry. If properly managed, such resources make significant contributions to the economy and can provide diverse employment opportunities for local communities. They also increase awareness of, and sensitivity to, environmental issues in general. Developing and implementing new and improved techniques for the rescue and rehabilitation of oiled wildlife and for the remediation of contaminated foreshore, apart from its inherent value, will contribute to the sustainability of such resources both at the national and international level.
