Have you had wet paper bags rip or stacks of boxes collapse during shipping? Novel polymer strength agents will be combined with nanoparticles to develop very strong paper packaging meeting Australia's needs. We will produce very strong paper packaging resisting frequent moisture changes while remaining fully recyclable. These strength agents will be produced and used in Australia to manufacture the fibre packaging needed to ship our manufactured and agriculture goods within Australia and for export. The Paper industry is the largest manufacturing industry in rural Australia with sales of $4 billion and 5,900 direct and 85,000 indirect jobs.Read moreRead less

The outcome of this work will be a comprehensive theoretical framework by which microstructural information is distilled into an accurate multiscale model of fibre suspensions, readily applicable to industrial situations. This work will have a direct impact on the design capability and performance of a wide range of mechanisms and industrial processes involving fibres. The development of better models for industrially useful suspensions offers a competitive advantage for a diverse range of Australian industries, from the paper manufacture sector, to the production of fibre-filled composite materials.Read moreRead less
Development of composite materials from waste paper and plastics. Significant tonnages of plastics are currently not recycled because of paper impurities. This project will develop compounding and processing procedures, define the thermal and mechanical properties of the recycled composites and develop novel composite materials using plastics as a matrix and waste paper as a filler. These processes will then be applied to factory trials.
Reduced water usage in the Australian pulp and paper industry through novel process chemistry. Norske Skog Paper Mill operates two paper mills on major rivers in Australia. The knowledge gained from this project will help the paper mills to find strategies to control the build-up of the detrimental material and deal with it in such a way that the process water can be recycled and the paper mills can reduce water consumption.Read moreRead less
Characterisation and Mitigation of Caustic Cracking: A Safety and Maintenance Concern in Alumina and Pulp-and-Paper Processing. Extraction of alumina from mineral bauxite (Bayer process) and pulp-and-paper processing (Kraft process) are major industries in Australia. Cracking of reaction vessels, digesters, cleaning tanks and pipework are major concern for plant integrity, occupational health, safety and environment. Caustic cracking is often the first suspect when a failure occurs. The proposed program will investigate the role of critical impurities and additives, temperature and stress fluctuations in caustic cracking of mild steel and their weldments (known to be most susceptible). This project will also develop an intellectual and infrastructural base that will also be a vital resource for several Australian industries where such cracking is a major concern.Read moreRead less

ARC Research Hub for BioProcessing Advanced Manufacturing. The aim of the Research Hub is to develop functional materials to maximize the value of forest resources; and green chemistry and energy solutions for bioprocessing industries. Lignocellulosic streams will be converted into a complement of marketable materials, chemicals and energy products. Examples include new polymers and composites, smart packaging, chemical intermediates, fuel, green energy and nanocellulose and cellulosic fibre applications. These will drive advances in chemical engineering, materials and green chemistry for the full conversion of lignocellulosics. The Hub will complement research developments with short courses and a problem-based Masters in BioProcess Engineering to keep industry workers up to date with evolving science and technology.Read moreRead less

The paper industry is a key industry in the Australian economy and particularly in rural and regional Australia. 6000 people are employed directly by the paper manufacturing companies and many thousands more employed in providing services and inputs to the industry. This grant aims to assure the future of the industry by developing standards to measure the environmental impact; by using these standards and innovative materials to greatly reduce the environmental impact of the industry; and by developing new highly profitable products for the industry including a lightweight corrugated box that won't sag when wet, a paper-mineral composite to capture and store green house gases.Read moreRead less
Cellulosic and paper-based biosensors for blood analysis. Testing the blood compatibility of an Australian evacuated for surgery; measuring the iron content from India for anemia treatment; identifying the outbreak of malaria in Pakistan; measuring prostate specific antigen/blood screening in your home. These are novel applications for paper biosensors, which will improve health and create new jobs in Australia.
Study of molecular interactions between wood pitch fixatives and components of wood pitch. Wood resins, released in pulping, agglomerate in the papermaking process to cause pitch deposits. These deposits adversely affect paper machine efficiency and product quality and limit further recycling of process water. Wood resins, released in pulping, agglomerate in the papermaking process to cause pitch deposits. These deposits adversely affect paper machine efficiency and product quality and limit further recycling of process water. This project aims to investigate the interactions between the components of the wood resins and different fixatives using capillary electrophoresis and other techniques. This knowledge will provide a better understanding of the role of the physical and chemical properties of the fixatives in fixing the different compounds in wood resins. Molecular modelling will be used to design new fixatives that will be selective to a mixture of wood resins.

The most important biological traits affecting profit in eucalypt plantations grown for pulpwood are growth, wood density and pulp yield. Shrinkage and collapse are important for timber production. Little information is available on the size and direction of the correlations between these traits, yet they are important in determining selection response in breeding as well as environmental impacts on pulp and sawlog yield. The collaborating growers and breeders have brought together a unique base of Eucalyptus globulus and E. nitens field trials that will allow an integrated quantitative and molecular genetic study of the interrelationships amongst these key profit traits.Read moreRead less
