Understanding patterns of physical activity in youth: exploring compensatory effects. The promotion of physical activity to youth is a public health priority. This project will inform the development of physical activity promotion strategies by examining when children are active, why they are active, and how these patterns change following participation in physical activity or the restriction of sedentary behaviour.
Children’s physical activity threshold. This project aims to investigate children’s short-term responses to increases and decreases in physical activity above and below usual levels. Increasing physical activity is important for population health, but efforts to increase physical activity have largely been unsuccessful. Few studies have successfully changed this behaviour over time. Individuals may have a daily physical activity threshold which could affect efforts to increase physical activity. ....Children’s physical activity threshold. This project will examine public health infrastructure and capacity in three states - mapping the implementation of core functions, assessing current infrastructure, comparing organisational approaches, and developing measures of local public health ....Strengthening the capacity of public health organisations to deliver effective public health services. In an effort to maintain and improve the health of the population Australia has defined the core public health functions that must be carried out. This project will examine public health infrastructure and capacity in three states - mapping the implementation of core functions, assessing current infrastructure, comparing organisational approaches, and developing measures of local public health capacity. These will then become industry benchmarks to guide investment and interventions, and to assess the quality of these. This project aims to better understand and address the transmission of anxiety and bonding difficulties across generations.
The relationships between retail availability, peer smoking and tobacco purchase and consumption: a diary study of smoking behaviour. Despite multiple public health initiatives, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death, costing the Australian community more than 19,000 lives each year. Public awareness of the dangers of smoking is high, yet around 19% of Australians continue to smoke. Social effects (e.g. the presence of nearby smokers) and the high retail availability of cigarette ....The relationships between retail availability, peer smoking and tobacco purchase and consumption: a diary study of smoking behaviour. Despite multiple public health initiatives, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death, costing the Australian community more than 19,000 lives each year. Public awareness of the dangers of smoking is high, yet around 19% of Australians continue to smoke. Social effects (e.g. the presence of nearby smokers) and the high retail availability of cigarettes are likely to be associated with smoking rates and failed quit attempts, yet there is little research in this area. This is is the first study to examine motorcycle protective clothing from a whole-system perspective. In Australia, motorcyclists are over-represented in casualty rates and currently cost the Australian community more than two billion Australian dollars per year.
