This research will address ARC Research Priority Area 2: promoting the health and wellbeing of mothers, and also supporting mothers? abilities to give their children a healthy start to life. We will assess the response of Australian women to body changes during pregnancy and the postpartum in order to determine whether findings overseas are applicable and can be enhanced in Australian women. In addition, given that at least one in 10 pregnant women will develop post-partum depression, a thorough understanding of early warning signs of risk for post-natal depression is necessary to relieve the suffering of many Australian women.

Pathways from Child Protection and Juvenile Justice. Almost 50% of children (10-14 year) in the Juvenile Justice (JJ) system have substantiated histories in Child Protection (CP). The vast majority of children with CP histories do not go on to offend. Other children, with no CP history, exhibit troubled behaviour and offending. The accuracy of instruments designed to identify at-risk children and adolescents will be investigated and individual and social factors that contribute to maladjustment ....Pathways from Child Protection and Juvenile Justice. Almost 50% of children (10-14 year) in the Juvenile Justice (JJ) system have substantiated histories in Child Protection (CP). The vast majority of children with CP histories do not go on to offend. Other children, with no CP history, exhibit troubled behaviour and offending. The accuracy of instruments designed to identify at-risk children and adolescents will be investigated and individual and social factors that contribute to maladjustment and offending in these populations will be identified. The identification of factors that are related to children and adolescents entering the CP and JJ systems will inform the development of targeted prevention/intervention strategies.Read moreRead less
Evaluation of profile edge markings as a road safety countermeasure: Analysis of crash statistics and on-road study of driver behaviour and attitudes. Fatigue contributes to 20% of fatal car crashes. Profile line-marking (PLM) aims to reduce fatigue-related crashes by alerting drivers when they begin veering off the road. Substantial stretches are laid annually Australia-wide, although evaluations of PLM have been unsophisticated or flawed. We aim to improve understanding of PLM impacts by investigating: 1)beliefs/attitudes regarding PLM (e.g. "PLM damages cars"); 2)whether road-edge PLM increases head-on crashes; 3)the efficacy of PLM with more widely spaced "ribs", with and without separate raised pavement markers; 4)underlying mechanisms (e.g. reducing fatigue, increasing visibility during night/wet) in order to improve the efficacy and efficiency of PLM use.Read moreRead less
The influence of resistance training upon movement control in the elderly. The primary aim of this applied research project is to investigate the impact of resistance training in the elderly. The Development of Young Children's Mathematical Abilities: A Longitudinal Analysis. Many people have problems learning maths. Although maths is often seen as an esoteric subject of limited interest, poor maths skills are as great a handicap in education and employment as poor literacy, with similar costs for the individual and society. Many people have problems learning maths. Although maths is often seen as an esoteric subject of limited interest, poor maths skills are as great a handicap in education and employment as poor literacy, with similar costs for the individual and society. One cause of poor maths skills is developmental dyscalculia, a disability in which children's understanding of number is affected by underlying cognitive deficits. As yet there is no reliable way of identifying children with dyscalculia or other maths problems. Our research examines children's developing maths competencies as they enter and progress through primary school. Our aim is to develop diagnoses of different maths disabilities, so effective interventions can be implemented.Read moreRead less

Using innovative occlusion and training research designs on a driving The proposed project examines the contribution of a mental model approach to the perception of time and speed of own and other vehicles using innovative occlusion and training research designs on a driving simulator. Participants will be asked to make time and speed estimations under varying environmetal conditions such as urban and rural scenes, straight and curved roads, and with and without engine noise, and under drug states. The generality of the findings will be tested on an instrumented car. The project will increase our understanding of factors influencing speed perception, a critical component of safe driving behaviour.Read moreRead less
Engagement with schooling: Influences of motivation processes on the development and application of independent thinking skills. Motivation and flexible thinking skills are critical outcomes of schooling if adolescents are to become life-long learners. This collaborative project employs innovative methodology to investigate students? developing capacity to apply thinking skills to novel problems and how motivational processes contribute to these outcomes. Measurement of real-time sequences of reactions and decisions provide direct access to on-task processes not available from existing methods. Problem tasks developed in collaboration with teachers will be used with Year 7, 8 and 9 students in a cohort-sequential design. Findings will inform future innovations designed to engage and challenge educational achievement in adolescents.Read moreRead less
Reducing fire deaths - a new approach to smoke alarms. Disturbingly, those most at risk of dying in residential fires are also least likely to awaken to the current smoke alarm signal, now mandatory in Australian residences. This project will develop a new alarm (using Gibsonian, naturalistic sounds and/or a voice signal) and compare its waking efficacy with the current smoke alarm. Testing will involve three vulnerable groups; sleep deprived young adults, children and alcohol intoxicated. The r ....Reducing fire deaths - a new approach to smoke alarms. Waking up to a fire - optimising the smoke alarm signal. On any one night a significant proportion of the population is at risk of sleeping through the current smoke alarm in a fire emergency. Significant risk factors for not awakening include being a child, sleep deprivation, being a heavy sleeper, use of sleeping tablets, alcohol intoxication, and being aged over 60. Yet research suggests that a different alarm signal will awaken these groups more effectively at a lower volume. This innovati ....Waking up to a fire - optimising the smoke alarm signal. This project aims to enhance our understanding of complex social systems by developing empirically testable mathematical models for interactive, dynamic social processes. Models will be developed for such processes as the development of interpersonal and inter-organisational networks, and social influence and diffusion. They will be assessed using new and exacting evaluation techniques. The results will strengthen the mathematical foundation for modelling in the social sciences, and will have immediate application in several diverse domains, including: the structure of networks relevant to disease transmission; the social epidemiology of rural mental health; and the emergence of collective structures in organisations.Read moreRead less
