Variation in bacterial genomic mutation rates. Our measurement of global mutation rates will contribute to an understanding of the evolutionary properties of bacteria, the most diverse and successful organisms in the biosphere. Bacterial variation and culture richness contributes not only to ecological processes but also to emerging diseases. The studies will enhance capabilities essential in interpreting the evolution of epidemics and the kinetics of bacterial sweeps in nature. Variation also provides the source material for exploitation of bacterial products such as antibiotics. The results from understanding a complete set of mutational changes through genomic analysis will provide the most direct estimates of variation in evolving bacteria.Read moreRead less
Pandemic Influenza, Human Resources and Critical Infrastructure Dependencies: Mitigating The Impact on Hospitals. Pandemic planning is conducted from a health-centric model which only considers subsystems within health. This study will determine the impact of a pandemic on the hospital system by failures of human resources and external systems (such as power, finance and teleocmmunications) which comprise critical infrastructure of society. The results will enable identification of key weak poin ....Pandemic Influenza, Human Resources and Critical Infrastructure Dependencies: Mitigating The Impact on Hospitals. Pandemic planning is conducted from a health-centric model which only considers subsystems within health. This study will determine the impact of a pandemic on the hospital system by failures of human resources and external systems (such as power, finance and teleocmmunications) which comprise critical infrastructure of society. The results will enable identification of key weak points, strengthening of health systems and resilience in the event of a pandemic or other disruption.Read moreRead less

Regulation of MHC-I and ICAM-1 by flavivirus, West Nile. This project investigates the intracellular signalling pathway responsible for the expression of genes which are critical to our immune response. We have demonstrated in a mouse model that high levels of expression of two of these genes in flavivirus encephalitis are associated with a survival advantage. We would expect this project to provide basic new information about the mechanisms of expression of these genes as well as information ab ....Regulation of MHC-I and ICAM-1 by flavivirus, West Nile. This project investigates the intracellular signalling pathway responsible for the expression of genes which are critical to our immune response. We have demonstrated in a mouse model that high levels of expression of two of these genes in flavivirus encephalitis are associated with a survival advantage. We would expect this project to provide basic new information about the mechanisms of expression of these genes as well as information about the interaction of this family of viruses, flavivirus with the host.Read moreRead less
