Discs Large (Dlg) and Scribble are proteins that regulate cell shape by concentrating at particular regions within the cell and recruiting other proteins to that region. It is thought that the two proteins interact with each other, and with other proteins involved in protein trafficking and cell architecture, but it is not known how these events coordinate to produce a net outcome on cell shape. To answer these questions, the dynamic events involved in localization of Dlg, Scribble, and associated proteins will be determined, in mammalian cells and in whole organs of the vinegar fly.Read moreRead less

The proposal seeks to establish an integrated microscopy facility and thus to expand the high-resolution imaging capabilities at Swinburne University of Technology, Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute and the University of Melbourne. The provision of the equipment requested will establish an innovative real-time multi-dimensional multi-photon imaging facility of world class. This facility will be accessed on a cooperative basis by the participants and will be available for collaborative projects with other Australian institutions and industry. The requested equipment will be used in conjunction with existing femtosecond laser and lifetime imaging systems installed in the research laboratories of the participating institutions. The facility will enable real-time investigations of biomolecular processes and the development of novel biomedical imaging techniques as well as the state-of-the-art nanophotonic devices such as nano-tweezers and nano compact disks.Read moreRead less
Sequencing the mammalian transcriptome in toto. The mammalian genome projects have provided a huge leap forward for biological research by giving the framework to study genes on a global scale. The mammalian genome projects have provided a huge leap forward for biological research by giving the framework to study genes on a global scale. This project will provide human genome project scale information for every major tissue in mammals and will provide the research community with a world class resource to further genomic research. It will also investigate parts of gene regulation which have been invisible to researchers in the past. Discovering these rules will provide novel insights in pathology with a genetic component and provide a further boost to biotechnological approaches to obtain expression of specific sets of genes in model systems. The Fellow will elucidate the mechanisms and consequences of a fundamental new phenomenon in immunology. This is likely to profoundly impact upon approaches to detecting and treating immune-related diseases such as autoimmunity, transplantation, vaccination and immunodeficiencies. The ongoing project and the work that led to our discovery involves interdisciplinary collaborations between physicists and biologists to apply frontier laser technologies to biological studies. These technologies will not only facilitate our elucidation of immune development and function, but will also be made available to other research in Australia and overseas.Read moreRead less

Detection and characterisation of micro-organisms such as airborne biological agents, parasites in domestic water supplies and micro-organisms used in the food and beverage industry, is of national importance. All biological systems have rich absorption signatures in the UV enabling detection of biological specimens with high sensitivity and selectivity using optical methods. For these applications compact and inexpensive tunable UV lasers are required; however to date tunable UV lasers have been limited to bulky and expensive systems. We propose to engineer novel, low cost, compact, tunable UV cerium lasers and demonstrate their applicability to selective optical detection of micro-organisms.Read moreRead less

Through membership of Gemini, Australian astronomers have access to the world-class facilities necessary to maintain their high international profile and great public visibility in Galactic and extragalactic astronomy, and also to enhance the national capacity to construct advanced scientific instrumentation. Australia has already won a contract to build one of the instruments.Read moreRead less
