Mapping fertility control among migrant and refugee women in Australia. This project aims to increase understanding of fertility control among migrant and refugee women living in Australia. This vulnerable group of women report low rates of contraception use and high rates of unintended pregnancy, with significant negative health implications. This project will examine women’s negotiation of fertility control, within the context of broader sexual and reproductive embodiment. It will provide novel insight into women’s negotiation of contraception choice and sides effects, abortion and reproductive coercion, recognising women’s agency, across a range of cultural contexts and backgrounds. Using feminist pedagogy to resist harmful messages of weight-loss dieting. This project aims to develop strategies to intervene in destructive weight-loss dieting norms aimed at women at a cultural level. Weight-loss dieting is a gateway to developing eating disorders; psychiatric conditions with a total socioeconomic cost of $69.7 billion in Australia and the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses. Sexual health of migrant women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups: an international comparison. This project will examine the sexual health beliefs and practices of women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, who are recent migrants to Australia and Canada. This analysis will inform the development of guidelines for sexual health information, which will be evaluated as part of the project.
Contraceptive technologies and reproductive choice among immigrant women. New immigrant and refugee women often have poor access to information, advice and support about contraceptive choices. Working with key immigrant and sexual health partner organisations, this project will identify ways to enhance choice and agency to ensure accessible services and optimal outcomes for women and their families.
The changing meanings of human eggs in fertility, assisted reproduction and stem cell research. Australian women are faced with difficult choices regarding when to have children. Assisted reproductive technologies for donating and banking fertile oocytes (eggs) are becoming important elements in these choices. This research will improve public and professional understanding of the changing meanings oocytes have for various groups of women.
