Increasing amounts of digital multimedia data in the form of video is being captured and stored. However, even the most advanced storage and retrieval techniques lack the features required to be used singly, or in combination, to fulfil a wide range of user needs and rapid access to multimedia resources, even in a very large video database. The core challenges are indeed to develop efficient, smart and intelligent web-based multimedia mining in Australia and elsewhere. In this project, we will explore techniques and develop algorithms for content-based multimedia retrieval and mining in multimedia databases.

Existing electronic commerce have shown profound limitations when dealing with key issues related to electronic commerce applications, such as data interoperability, mobility and performance. The aim of this project is to understand the complexity of the underlying problems related to electronic commerce applications, and to subsequently produce a robust and efficient infrastructure to support them. It is significant because it is expected to automate most of the tedious and complex activities of on-line transactions. The main outcome will be a set of techniques and programs that will form the basis of the commercial software, with a significant export potential.

Quality of Service-based Scheduling of e-Research Application Workflows on Global Grids. e-Research has the potential to offer Australia significant economic and social benefits as it enables researchers from different disciplines and organisations to engage in collaborative scientific investigation. In e-Research environments, users need to have secure access to remote resources owned by different organisations. Since these resources are not directly under the control of e-Research applications, they need to negotiate with resource providers for access time, duration, and the level of quality of service expected to make sure that the interlinked operations are performed as required. This project develops information and communications technologies that enable the creation of such e-Research environments.

Efficient and scalable middlewares are an important part of our current competitive economy. This is particularly important in Australia where production and population centres are spread over large distances. As a result, inefficiencies in web-based disparate businesses are likely to have a strong impact on the national economy. This project will provide an integrated framework and solutions to urgently needed integration problems faced by current industries. The development of a reliable and flexible infrastructure will benefit small and medium-scale enterprises, as they will be able to participate in large-scale supply chains and expand their business, without having to invest in expensive new computer systems and software.

However, because of the high dynamic nature of the Internet as well as the specific requirements of mobile environments, existing M-services have limitations as they lack support for flexible transactions. The aim of this project is to design an efficient mobile transaction-based infrastructure to support highly adaptable M-Services. This infrastructure will provide robust and efficient management of business transactions across different enterprises. The outcomes of this project will include a set of advanced techniques and algorithms that will form the basis of the next generation of mobile web services.

Designing for Reliability and Maintainability in Service-Oriented Architectures. This project aims to build expertise in the design of computer software, especially enterprise systems in domains such as finance and logistics that are vast in scale and highly complex and geographically separated. By fostering and formalising techniques for improving developer productivity and the reliability and maintainability of enterprise systems, Australia can secure a place as a world leader in software methodology, with an emphasis on technology production rather than consumption. Australian computer consulting services are a $19.5b industry, whilst the wider services sector, which is increasingly reliant on automation to stay competitive, accounts for 70% of Australia's GNP.

Infrastructure for large-scale data resource sharing between research institutions – an environmental case study. The project creates a federated distributed data infrastructure for research, that encourages data creators to make their data available to other scientists, and encourages users to make use of data available from many sources. The vision is to establish an ICT infrastructure to facilitate a whole-of-environment approach to environmental research. The outcome is a proof-of-concept application based upon a case study of Queensland Environmental Protection Agency’s databases, to gain an in-depth understanding of the complexity, scope and key technological barriers for establishing an ICT infrastructure, to identify where the latest technologies can be used and where the gaps are for these technologies to be used in environmental sciences.

Developing Reliable Bio-Crypto Features for Mobile Template Protection. Cost of identity theft crimes were at multi-million dollars in Australia in 2007. Technically this is due to the fact that conventional personal identification number and token based security mechanisms cannot identify genuine users. Biometric fingerprint security systems emerge as a promising solution. However protection of the mobile embedded fingerprint template itself is an unresolved problem. The project aims to develop new ways designing bio-cryptosystems that provide strong security strength. The project will bring new body of knowledge into this field and place Australia in the forefront of this research, and also result in strengthened security of IT infrastructure and systems for industries.
