Since then, significant progress has been made in tropical rock oyster RD&E, both in Australia and internationally, and work is underway across the tropics to further develop the industry (Nowland et al., 2019). To maintain momentum and continue to foster collaboration in this field, an International Tropical Rock Oyster Workshop will be hosted by NT Fisheries and The Pacific Community (SPC), supported by the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA), in the days before the World Aquaculture Conference 2023 in Darwin. The workshop will bring together a broad range of stakeholders to discuss the status and current knowledge of tropical oyster aquaculture research and development. This will provide an opportunity to share experiences and develop an international network for tropical oyster aquaculture. As well as to discuss and document current bottlenecks/issues confronting tropical oyster farming, such as; hatchery production, disease, grow-out technology and shellfish quality assurance.
This workshop is running alongside the World Aquaculture Conference 2023 in Darwin. The project team have identified key people in the region (commercial produces and Traditional Owners) that would add additional value to the workshop and the World Aquaculture Conference 2023. However, they do not have the means to fund their own attendance.

Specialized human blood cells that control blood loss and clotting (platelets) are currently difficult to test in the clinical laboratory, meaning patients are at risk of excessive bleeding or serious clot formation during disease or treatment. The aim of this proposal is to use our new reagents and assays to develop more reliable methods for evaluating relative bleeding or clotting risk in individuals.
Autoimmune-based thrombocytopenia can be a life-threatening adverse event associated with viral load, surgery, drug therapies or the use of the anticoagulant, heparin. This grant will define mechanisms of anti-platelet antibody-dependent platelet activation and assess shedding of platelet-specific glycoprotein (GP)VI as an immediate consequence of this activation, provide a new strategy for evaluating risk of thrombosis in HIT.

Platelets in the blood can kill the Plasmodium parasite, which lives inside red blood cells and causes malaria. Platelets bind parasite-infected red cells and release a molecule that is toxic to the parasite. This project will study why a red cell molecule called Duffy is also needed for this function of platelets. Most Africans carry a gene for Duffy that stops its expression in red cells, and may therefore be more susceptible to malaria because their platelets cannot kill the malaria parasite.
Development of environmentally-friendly bioinsecticides for control of Australian crop pests. Insect pests cause over $3 billion of damage each year to Australian crops. Current insecticides are becoming less effective, and they often have adverse environmental impacts. This project aims to develop a new generation of environmentally-friendly insecticides that can be used to control insect pests on farms and around the home and garden.
Mineral content of leaves and the ratio of water loss to carbon gain: environmental and genetic controls and comparison with stable isotopic measures. The ash content of leaves has promise as a cheap screen of water-use efficiency or of 'vigour' in crop plants, but the underlying mechanisms are not understood. The underlying science is at the intersection of plant growth, water use and nutrition. This project will aid breeders in understanding the conditions under which the screen may work.
