This project aims to develop next generation models of permeation in mixed matrix membranes by targeting the effects of isotherm nonlinearity, and its interplay with filler particle size and its distribution, and thereby provide the platform for achieving breakthroughs in separation processes based on such membranes. With this platform, improved performance of mixed matrix membranes for key industrially important separations is expected to be achieved, using novel filler/polymer combinations and by developing a broad, widely applicable, protocol for the tailoring of their interface. These advances are anticipated not only to transform the ways in such membranes are designed and optimised, but also to apply to transport in dispersion-based composites in general.Read moreRead less

This project intends to deliver a cost-effective efficient bioelectrochemical process converting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into chemicals and fuels. Microbes are fascinating organisms giving us cheese, beer and wine. A special group of bacteria is even able to produce electricity from waste materials, or eat electricity to convert CO2 emissions into chemicals. This process has the potential to dramatically improve the sustainability of future chemical industry and environmental biotechnology. It has been shown that acetate, an important precursor in the chemical industry, can be produced in laboratory-scale reactors using selected microbial communities. The goal of the project is to engineer a process able to produce a broad range of biochemicals and biofuels from CO2 at high rates and high product concentrations.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop cost-effective Cu2ZnSnS4 nanocrystals for two solar devices for electricity and hydrogen production. The copper-zinc-tin-sulphide (Cu2ZnSnS4) nanoparticle for solar cells has been less than two per cent efficient for years and photoelectrochemical devices have been recently recognised but less explored. The combined innovative modification of its nanocrystals, and grain growth approach for enhancing light absorption and photogenerated carrier collection efficiency should elucidate underlying mechanism of and provide solutions to the problem which has baffled researchers in above areas for several years. The intended resulting simple, cost-effective solar-driven electricity and hydrogen devices should make significant contributions to goals of commercially viable storage of solar energy and solutions to global energy and environment issues.Read moreRead less
