In both Australia and Germany many regional areas have experienced economic and social decline. Clusters offer a means of fostering local economic development thereby arresting regional social and economic deterioration. The research focuses on those clusters that rely on knowledge transfer between organisations. Through identifying the drivers and impediments to the formation of knowledge based clusters, the research aims to provide practical guidance to regionally-based organizations to assist in the successful formation and maintenance of clusters. In doing so, the research will identify how clusters that rely on the sharing of organizational knowledge may promote greater regional employment possibilities.Read moreRead less

How to use information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve teaching and learning outcomes has become a critical question for educators world-wide. Governments are investing hugely in hardware, software and infrastructure to support the use of technologies but the research conducted into their effective use in inadequate. This proposal will investigate a relatively new methodology, design experiments, that has potential to provide the basis for enhancing both pedagogy and outcomes through technology integration. The research will determine the major principles, methods and critical characteristics of design experiments, and develop guidelines for their use in ICT research.Read moreRead less
An Integrated Bridge Monitoring System Based on the GPS and Pseudolite Technologies. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology can be used for precise deflection measurement of manmade structures such as buildings, bridges, etc. When integrated with additional signals from pseudolites (PL) that transmit GPS-like signals, changes in the height(s) of the monitored point(s) can be measured to millimetre accuracy. In collaboration with University of Nottingham researchers, a bridge structure in the U.K. will be used as a testbed, and will be the first time that PLs have been used for such an application. The expected outcomes include a suite of deformation monitoring algorithms capable of online analysis of the combined GPS-PL outputs.Read moreRead less

The RVM program focus on university-business collaboration will orient future collaborative projects and analyses. This will enhance the state-of-the-art of research evaluation in Australia over time. Extension of the CIs unique survey database will incorporate comparative dimensions into research value mapping. A focus on Australian respondents in the international database (n=1300) will lead to analyses that inform science policy and scientist human resource development in Australia. This will provide a deeper understanding of Australia’s science role in the Asia Pacific region.Read moreRead less
Active polymer surfaces for control of fluid movement. The realisation of a diverse array of remote or portable chemical/biological monitoring systems depends on the development of low power fluid management protocols. The use of appropriate conducting polymer surfaces should enable this to occur. We envisage the integration of these fluid management platforms into portable, remote autonomous monitoring systems for environmental industrial and biomedical applications.
Magnetic walls as nano-manipulators for physics, bio- and medical technologies. The focus of this project is the development of new scientific and technological aspects of nanomanipulators allowing not only the effective control of molecules and other magnetic quantities for a new approach in computation, but also the vital influence of biological processes at the molecular level. The outlook of this idea becomes increasingly promising in science and a broad range of industries (electronics, mat ....Magnetic walls as nano-manipulators for physics, bio- and medical technologies. Recent advances in network bandwidth and processing power have led to the emergence of real time multimedia streaming applications and it is expected that such applications will become an even more dominant source of traffic in future computer networks. Quality of service studies for real-time applications in high-speed networks, point to the importance of the transport layer functionality in admission control, monitoring end-to-end delays, and network bandwidth adaptability. The project will study, design, develop and analyse a comprehensive model for the virtual transport layer to satisfy the necessary quality of service requirements for the next generation of multimedia-based applications.Read moreRead less

Although many methods from many disciplines have been used, somewhat imperfectly, to examine knowledge creation and knowledge networks, the most accepted method in economics and strategy is patent citation analysis. Yet, even users of the methodology recognize that it is an imperfect measure of innovation, innovativeness and network linkages between innovations. The study sets up a methodology to examine the relationship between citations and network interactions between patent applicants. The value of the research is in providing a better measure of innovation and knowledge and in the normative lessons about establishing better scientific networks.Read moreRead less

Data obtained in-situ enable direct computation of solids assembly properties and their permeability to fluids. A specific application involving aggregate formation and sediment networks could be evaluated through micro-scale analysis combined with robust fluid flow simulations. The method can potentially be utilized to predict trends such as filtration behaviour of materials under different states of compression. This offers significant benefits in formulating the design of flocculated systems pertinent to a number of industrial sectors wishing to design optimum solid-liquid separation processes.Read moreRead less
