Improving social and economic outcomes for children of incarcerated mothers. This project aims to identify how children’s experiences of maternal incarceration shape their life course. These children are one of the most vulnerable yet invisible groups in society and are rising in number. This project aims to identify how children’s experiences of maternal incarceration shape their life course. These children are one of the most vulnerable yet invisible groups in society and are rising in number. This project intends to interrogate system contact with child protection, justice, education and health agencies using a unique linked dataset across 30 years and over three generations, to describe social and economic outcomes and how prison, child and maternal characteristics affect them. The project expects to provide critical evidence that can inform prevention strategies, with the potential to disrupt intergenerational patterns of profound disadvantage and reduce the social and economic costs of maternal incarceration to individuals and society.Read moreRead less
Regulation of Indigenous Safety Strategies: Night Patrols & Policy. This project aims to identify the qualities that make Indigenous night patrols (NPs) unique, to inform and improve the capacities of agencies and regulatory authorities and indigenous communities to work together, leading to greater security, peace and safety. This project aims to identify the qualities that make Indigenous night patrols (NPs) unique, to inform and improve the capacities of agencies and regulatory authorities and indigenous communities to work together, leading to greater security, peace and safety. Crime and safety in Aboriginal communities remains a major concern. NPs, an Australian innovation developed by Aboriginal communities, have become key players in local crime reduction strategies, and carry the endorsement of both government and Aboriginal communities. However, they are operating in an environment of increased ‘top-down’ control and regulation. Does greater accountability to government weaken NP’s ‘cultural’ accountability to communities? This project explores the qualities that make NPs unique. This includes the prominent, and neglected, role of Indigenous women as patrollers and clients, who may lose out should NPs become like mainstream community safety mechanisms.Read moreRead less
View and shape invariant modeling of human actions for smart surveillance. This project aims to enable surveillance cameras to interpret videos and detect unexpected activity in real time. This project aims to enable surveillance cameras to interpret videos and detect unexpected activity in real time. Existing surveillance cameras are unable to interpret videos. Because most are not monitored in real time, they play no role in improving security response time. The project plans to develop algorithms to detect actions from any camera viewpoint in continuous videos, a capability that is imperative for smart surveillance yet missing in current techniques. This would improve security and safety response time to events that need immediate attention, such as crimes and medical emergencies, and offer autonomous aids to elderly care, smart homes, child minding, patient monitoring and post-trauma rehabilitation.Read moreRead less
Informing intervention responses to violent offenders through data linkage. The project aims to capitalise on new data access capacity to improve knowledge on violent offender pathways and criminogenic needs, such as acquired brain injury, to reduce offending and re-offending. The project aims to capitalise on new data access capacity to improve knowledge on violent offender pathways and criminogenic needs, such as acquired brain injury, to reduce offending and re-offending. Violence is a major social and health issue nationally and internationally. While there has been substantial investment in treatment/prevention campaigns, rates of violence remain high. Using diverse linked administrative data, we will identify key risk factors and times in trajectories, as well as effective treatment/justice responses. Expected benefits include evidence-based recommendations and engagement with policymakers targeting recidivism, offender screening, treatment, and coordinated violence prevention policy and practice.Read moreRead less

Overall objective of this project is to measure, mathematically describe and implement in software mechanical properties of brain-skull interface – a critical component of current large and sophisticated computational models of the brain and the last missing piece of brain biomechanics knowledge. This will allow increased reliability of comprehensive biomechanical models used to simulate realistic injury and surgery scenarios.
The problem is significant and urgent. Every year in Australia, there are over 22,000 cases of traumatic brain injury, some of which could be prevented by better passive and active countermeasures; and over 12,000 neurosurgical procedures that surgical simulation could make more accurate and therefore safer.Read moreRead less

It plans to use mixed methods to investigate the ways in which online messages are received and interpreted and the contexts within which this occurs. It plans to apply an innovative research framework using media theories and concepts to the study of online violent extremism. The project aims to contribute to the development of measures to counter violent extremism by addressing assumptions about the relationship between online violent extremist content and violent extremist behaviour; and developing understanding of how violent extremist messaging is received and interpreted.Read moreRead less
The Influence of Fracture Network Topology on Fluid Flow in the Subsurface. This project focuses on developing methods for the simulation of fluid flow in fractured rock aquifers. Given the large computational requirements involved in modelling discretely fractured rock masses, scaling approaches are required to allow for simulation at field scales. The sensitivity of the scaling to the parameters describing the fracture network will be investigated. It is anticipated that the scaled function ....The Influence of Fracture Network Topology on Fluid Flow in the Subsurface. It is anticipated that the scaled functional relationships will be quite network specific, and that the identification of the controls on the form of the scaling relationships will allow for the focussing of data acquisition to the most salient information, and will reduce the costs involved.Read moreRead less

New vaccination strategies are urgently needed for a variety of diseases, including cancer. The problem with cancer vaccines is that it is difficult to trigger a response to a self protein. We propose that a prime-boost vaccination, using yellow fever virus and modified vaccinia virus ankara, could create very strong responses against tumor antigens. This approach can be patented and can revive that field of tumor vaccination, which is currently restrained by the difficulty of breaking immunological tolerance. We envisage the construction of a anti-cancer vaccine vector with obvious market potential. An exciting prospect is that this approach could be used as a prophylactic vaccine and possibly also as a therapeutic vaccine.Read moreRead less
