Dengue fever (DF) is the most important mosquito-transmitted viral disease in the world. The large-scale re-emergence of DF in the Asia-Pacific region during the past few decades has renewed its status as a serious international public health problem. Global climate change is anticipated to impact upon the biology and ecology of vectors and consequently the risk of DF transmission. The principal research aim of this study is to project the impact of future climate change on DF.

As the prevalence of obesity at younger ages increases, people are living longer with obesity. We have recently shown that this has an increased risk of mortality and diabetes. In this project we will look at the extent to which an increasing length of time lived with obesity is also associated with increased risks of hypertension, heart disease, cancer, arthritis and disability. We will also look at the effect of this increasing duration on the overall health of Australian adults.
Optimising Severe Malaria Treatment Using Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic Modeling

Summary
Every year, severe malaria kills up to 800,000 people worldwide. To prevent death, a patient must be treated promptly and effectively. Children and adults vary in terms of their response to a malaria drug, and therefore may require a different dosing regimen. We will perform a rigorous analytical assessment of antimalarial drug concentration and efficacy data to determine dosing regimens. This will improve the treatment of severe malaria, and thereby, reduce malaria-related mortality.

Summary
Clostridium difficile is a bacterium that causes inflammation of the large bowel that can lead to surgical removal of the bowel or death. In North America and Europe, an international epidemic strain has caused large outbreaks of severe, fatal disease. In 2009, this strain was identified for the first time in Perth, Australia. We will investigate strains currently present in Brisbane and Perth and risk of outbreaks occurring from imported and local strains.

Summary
Human echinococcosis is a chronic debilitating disease with a death rate that can exceed 90%. In China it is a major public health issue where recent environmental changes are likely to increase transmission rates, thus increasing the disease burden. This project will assess the impact of these environmental changes on the transmission of this disease over space and time, it will predict where new cases will arise, and determine the best methods for sustainable control and then elimination.
