The project may thus contribute also to heightened Australian awareness of the need to balance security objectives abroad with minimizing civilian casualties so as to protect political capital.Read moreRead less

This project will explore the significant African-American influences on the rise of the 1920s Aboriginal political movement. Previously undisclosed material revealed over the past two years has necessitated a re-evaluation of early Australian Aboriginal political history. Why was the history of the rise of early Aboriginal political activism missing for some five decades? Why were significant relationships with high profile African-American identities obscured and erased from memories? The research outcomes from this archival study will make a contribution to the contemporary issues surrounding reconciliation and the current volatile historical debate over Aboriginal history. This project holds significant international racial historical importance.

This project investigates an apparent contradiction: though the Roman empire fragmented into multiple states, its successors developed parallel, not diverse, cultural and political practices. I approach this issue by exploring the role and conduct of communication throughout these states. Applying new methodologies to unused sources, the study will examine the practicalities of face-to-face and textual exchanges and their conceptual contexts, to track pathways of communication. This new conceptualisation of the post-imperial period will produce a book; translations with commentary of main sources; and an international symposium with proceedings (publishers are already involved in the latter two).Read moreRead less

Specifically, the issues of acculturation, formation, hybridization, and the disappearance or persistence of ethnic identities over time are integral to developing culturally sensitive and socially advantageous policies of multiculturalism and immigration. Australia also has a significant cultural interest in the Balkans, as large numbers of its citizens perceive cultural identity from the region. For that reason, this research has significant potential to arouse wider community interest, and stimulate dialogue between different communities in Australia.Read moreRead less

This project proposes to view the South China Sea/Gulf of Thailand rim as a single economic region, a "water frontier" that endured for two centuries. Focusing on the Mekong delta and adjacent coasts, it will examine the major roles the Chinese played in the establishment of the Siamese and Vietnamese states. Despite the frontier's marginalisation in the nineteenth century, the populations supplied the manpower and expertise that fueled the national and colonial economies which later developed around Saigon, Bangkok and Singapore. Our aim is to restore the "lost" history of this region and its peoples and to set new agendas for future research.Read moreRead less
