Regular participation in physical activity is associated with a range of physical and mental health benefits in adults, including reduced risk for cardiovascular disease, non-insulin dependent diabetes, overweight, hypertension, osteoporosis, some cancers and anxiety and depression. Regular participation in physical activity also improves the ability to meet the demands of work and to engage in leisure activities. Approximately half of all adult Australians are insufficiently active to gain the many health benefits associated with participation in regular physical activity. Modification of the physical environment is one avenue through which the prevalence of physcial activity participation might be increased. More specifically, there has been considerable speculation about the role of public transportation systems in increasing the proportion of adults who are adequately physically active, but no empirical evidence is available. This study will employ a quasi-experimental design to determine if the extension of the Sydney Light Rail System to Lilyfield results in an increase in the prevalence of physical activity (primarily walking) in the affected area, in comparison with a demographically similar area which is not affected by the light rail extension.Read moreRead less
National Implementation Trial Of An Evidence-informed Workplace Sitting Reduction Intervention

Summary
Long periods of sitting time are bad for health. We will conduct a three-year national trial with five workplace-health partner organizations testing a website-delivered program for reducing sitting time at work. It will be offered to over 10,000 desk-based employees. We will determine the impacts of the program as well as refinements needed for full-scale dissemination: uptake of the program, how well it can be delivered on a large scale, its impact on sitting time, and the costs involved.

This PhD project will identify the key mechanisms for successful scale-up and sustainability of a community based diabetes prevention program - the Kerala Diabetes Prevention Program (NHMRC Project ID 1005324). Based in India where diabetes is becoming increasingly common, these findings have global relevance. Findings will add to crucial evidence gaps in how to systematically scale-up effective prevention programs in order to maximise public health impact.

Transform-Us! is an innovative primary school program that has been found to substantially increase children’s physical activity levels, reduce sitting time and benefit health. Given evidence that school food policies can improve children’s dietary intake, Australian state governments have launched healthy canteen policies. However, these policies are poorly implemented. This research seeks to assess the effectiveness of an online classification tool in increasing policy compliance. The tool will be embedded in an online canteen system, and will automatically assess whether menu items are compliant as they are uploaded onto the online canteen system.

Only 15% of adolescents participate in adequate physical activity each day. Schools can be supported to adopt policies and practices which increase adolescent physical activity. This study aims to test a model of support to assist schools to offer a range of practices known to improve adolescent physical activity levels, within routine school practice. If effective, the model of support could be used to assist schools to implement a range of other policies and practices.
