Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common disorders of childhood, affecting 7% of school-age children. This project will use neuroimaging to describe how brain structure and function change across late childhood to early adolescence for children with and without ADHD, and how those changes reflect ADHD symptom severity and functional outcomes (academic, cognitive, social, and mental health).

Little is known about the inter-relationship of cultural factors and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes and these relationships have not been quantified. Through a large cohort study, this research will produce data that combines standard health measures with newly developed quantitative measures of cultural factors, supported by data linkage infrastructure. Robust analytical methods will be used to inform policy and program development.

Emissions from burning biomass (including fossil fuels) are major features of our environment and are the 4th leading global risk factor for premature death. As countries shift their patterns of energy use in response to global warming, new challenges are emerging. Understanding this is crucial to our ability to maintain health and stability in uncertain times. This CRE will examine the health consequences of (1) fossil fuel combustion, (2) landscape fires and (3) alternatives to fossil fuels.
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world affecting approximately 70 million people. Glaucoma can occur at any age but the commonest type occurs in middle to old age. The disease has a genetic basis and can be inherited. As a result we have been studying the genetics of the disease in two large families from Tasmania. We hope to identify the genes involved in disease causation using a number of genetic techniques. Whiteness: writing, reading, race. The national and community benefits of this project lie in the contribution it will make to the wider work of Australian reconciliation through its analyses of writing as one of the important meeting grounds between white and Aboriginal Australians. By analysing the race relations of writing culture, the project will contribute to the important work of understanding white-Indigenous relations in contemporary postcolonial Australia.
