Australian Population Research Network: Cross-Disciplinary Collaborations in Research on Australia's Population Transformations and Their Social, Economic and Environmental Implications. The wellbeing and sustainability of Australia's population are national priority issues. The primary outcome of the Initiative will be a plan for a Network that will promote collaboration among researchers across universities and disciplines whose work focuses on the following issues relating to Australia's pop ....Australian Population Research Network: Cross-Disciplinary Collaborations in Research on Australia's Population Transformations and Their Social, Economic and Environmental Implications. The wellbeing and sustainability of Australia's population are national priority issues. The primary outcome of the Initiative will be a plan for a Network that will promote collaboration among researchers across universities and disciplines whose work focuses on the following issues relating to Australia's population: family and work; health and longevity; immigration and identity; and environment and settlement. Linkages will be established with Commonwealth and State/Territory governments to better communicate the results of population research for policy development, and with researchers internationally to facilitate comparative work that is crucial to further theoretical and methodological development in the population field.Read moreRead less

Redesigning work for an ageing society. The significance of this proposal is the opportunity it creates to identify and manage occupational risks and vulnerabilities that challenge the retention of ageing workers in Australia. It will build a statistical overview of the main occupational risks faced by ageing workers and also design, implement and test interventions in Australian workplaces. The project will examine and adapt a leading international framework for managing ageing workforces, the ....Redesigning work for an ageing society. Why do good males die young? The relationship between ageing and sexual selection. A biological understanding of ageing is directly relevant to human welfare. We will use lab and field studies to explore the evolutionary genetics of ageing in an Australian cricket, with particular emphasis on how diet and the timing of reproduction influence the rate at which crickets deteriorate with age. Despite the central importance of ageing in our own lives, our understanding of the evolution of ageing is still incomplete. Reproductive interests of males and females often diverge, resulting in sexual conflict which may in turn drive the evolution of rapid ageing. I will use experimental evolution to investigate the role of sexual conflict in the evolution of age-specific mortality, reproductive ageing and lifespan in the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculates. This study will reveal the role of sexual interactions and reproduction in the ageing process and result in the development of important new resources for resolving the genetic basis of deteriorative ageing.Read moreRead less
Genetics of Postmenopausal Bone Loss. The major consequence of bone loss in our ageing society is fracture. At 50 years for women, the lifetime risk of sustaining an osteoporotic fracture is 50%. The consequences of these fractures, which can include reduced life expectancy, prolonged medical care, and loss of independence, have a profound socioeconomic impact in an ageing population. At the moment, Australia does not have adequate strategic planning and decision-support tools for forecasting the future demand for care services by older Australians; the likely cost of such services; and the financial capacity of older Australians to bear a greater share of these costs.
