This project will greatly extend our understanding of the impact of demographic change and ageing on the workforce. It will develop a conceptual framework to strategically inform workforce development and a workforce planning model to assist Australian workplaces to respond to the challenge of demographic change and ageing. The need to develop a better understanding of, and respond to, the implications of demographic change and ageing for workforce development in Australia has been recognised nationally through the National Strategy for Ageing and is of direct relevance to the ARC's national research priority Ageing Well, Ageing Productively. Towards a superannuation system fit for the future. Towards a superannuation system fit for the future. This project aims to develop a stochastic superannuation model and propose alternative post retirement solutions, using data-led understanding of savings habits. Funding for the increasing cost of the growing older population will, if not modelled, forecast and managed adequately, swamp all other welfare and state funded costs. To manage older age costs adequately, governments need to encourag ....Towards a superannuation system fit for the future. To manage older age costs adequately, governments need to encourage people to save and provide ways people can save—but need to better understand how people save money for their old age. This research is expected to enable the “superannuation change“ necessary for the superannuation system to remain sustainable and fund retirees to live well.Read moreRead less
Temporary Overseas Migration to Australia. A recent development in immigration policy is the shift to temporary entry arrangements for business and skill migration. Together with an increase in other types of temporary visitors, this has resulted in a significant rise in temporary migration and the number of temporary residents in Australia. Together with an increase in other types of temporary visitors, this has resulted in a significant rise in temporary migration and the number of temporary residents in Australia. The project will examine the key features of temporary overseas migration to Australia and the socioeconomic circumstances of temporary migrants. It will improve understanding of the factors motivating temporary migration, the labour market experiences and residential intentions of temporary migrants and assist the industry partner in assessing the demographic implications of Australia's immigration policies.Read moreRead less
Redesigning work for an ageing society. The significance of this proposal is the opportunity it creates to identify and manage occupational risks and vulnerabilities that challenge the retention of ageing workers in Australia. It will build a statistical overview of the main occupational risks faced by ageing workers and also design, implement and test interventions in Australian workplaces. The project will examine and adapt a leading international framework for managing ageing workforces, the ....Redesigning work for an ageing society. The project will examine and adapt a leading international framework for managing ageing workforces, the Finnish 'work ability' model,to the Australian context. The main outcomes will be both practical organisational guidelines and a broad policy framework for increasing the'work ability' of older workers, both in Australia and internationally.

Improved Indigenous population projections for policy and planning. This project will use a range of methods to understand the population dynamics of the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) population. This information will allow policy makers to plan and target resources and help Indigenous organisations understand what is happening to the population in their communities.
Causes and consequences of population turnover in the Northern Territory. The Northern Territory experiences an extraordinarily high rate of population turnover. Approximately one quarter (compared to less than 10% for most other states) of the Territory's resident population in 2001 had lived somewhere else 5 years earlier. The research will examine the characteristics and causes of this turnover as well as its long-term implications for the composition and associated planning capacity of the N ....Causes and consequences of population turnover in the Northern Territory. The research will examine the characteristics and causes of this turnover as well as its long-term implications for the composition and associated planning capacity of the NT population. Of particular interest is the effect of population transience on the establishment, maintenance, and continuation of knowledge systems, both desert and tropical.Read moreRead less
Care Needs, Costs and the Capacity for Self-Provision: Detailed Regional Projections for Older Australians to 2020. Government is starting to address the policy challenges associated with population ageing and the future needs of the ageing baby boomers. Government is starting to address the policy challenges associated with population ageing and the future needs of the ageing baby boomers. At the moment, Australia does not have adequate strategic planning and decision-support tools for forecasting the future demand for care services by older Australians; the likely cost of such services; and the financial capacity of older Australians to bear a greater share of these costs. This project therefore aims to develop a spatial microsimulation model to provide detailed regional projections for older Australians up to the year 2020 to help inform and assist with possible responses to these increasingly pressing social issues.Read moreRead less
Innovations in Demographic Modelling for Government Analysis and Planning. This project aims to create innovative and cutting-edge demographic models to better meet the needs of practitioners and researchers. This project aims to create innovative and cutting-edge demographic models to better meet the needs of practitioners and researchers. Together with the partner organisations, Commonwealth Treasury and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it will focus on creating more accurate and fit-for-purpose forecasting methods for Australian fertility, mortality, and migration, including a policy scenario model to produce population projections by visa/citizenship category and Australians overseas. Expected outcomes of this project include improved forecasting methods reported in open-access papers, user-friendly forecasting software and tools for the partner organisations, and a stronger relationship between researchers and practitioners.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop an innovative, Australian-specific multidimensional measure of gender equality. The project’s focus on conceptualising and measuring gender equality in the Australian context will address a significant barrier to the development, implementation and evaluation of targeted gender equality programs and policies. By partnering with government and industry representatives, this project will develop a baseline from which programs and policies can be measured. The project will also establish evidence about the effects of gender equality in relation to economic, social and wellbeing outcomes.Read moreRead less
Indicative impacts of population ageing on Australia's States, Territories and Local Communities. Population ageing and its associated shift to zero population growth and/or natural decline is occurring at substantially different rates across and within Australia's States and Territories. The trends, which are perhaps most marked in Tasmania - Australia's fastest ageing State - have significant implications for the economic growth and socio-economic composition of each region. This multi-level ....Indicative impacts of population ageing on Australia's States, Territories and Local Communities. This multi-level study will project the impact of population ageing on economic welfare at State and Territory level; and on the socio-demographic profile of Local Government regions in Tasmania. The two analyses will then be bought together in developing policy responses.Read moreRead less
