Post-market Surveillance Of Medicine-related Adverse Events

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $99,248.00
    Summary
Observational studies using administrative data are an important complement to spontaneous reporting systems for detecting medicine-related adverse events after they go to market, as they reflect real-world use of medicines; yet, they require rigorous methodological approaches to avoid bias. This project will review the existing methodologies for detecting adverse events in administrative data and apply them to Australian data.

Goodness-of-fit Testing And Extensions Of Relative Risk Models

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $380,558.00
    Summary
Information about the health consequences of exposure to causal factors is obtained from mathematical models of observed data. Relative risk models are recommended for observations over time on a cohort of subjects, but it is not known how best to assess the adequacy of such models or whether they can be applied to ordered outcomes or multiple measurements on the same individuals. These research aims to address those issues, and thereby to increase the practical usefulness of these models.

Sociocultural Determinants Of Childrens Oral Health From Refugee And Migrant Communities

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $57,342.00
    Summary
Refugee and migrant children experience significantly poorer oral health than the non-migrant population. Factors that impact on poor oral health include perceptions of tap water safety, dietary changes, access to prevention and treatment health services, and language barriers. This study will explore reasons for these factors and potential solutions. Communities involved are those which have arrived the most recently and those with large numbers of young children.

‘The Hearts And Minds Study’: A Population Study Of Mental Health Trajectories, Cardiovascular Outcomes And Shared Biological Markers In Childhood And Mid-adulthood

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $318,768.00
    Summary
Cardiovascular disease and mental illness are leading causes of mortality and morbidity. They frequently co-occur in adulthood, but it is poorly understand how and when this relationship develops. The Hearts and Minds Study will examine how mental health (positive and negative) over a 10-year period impacts cardiovascular health at two important life course stages: early childhood and mid-adulthood. Findings will enhance understanding of cardiovascular and mental health in our community.

Developing A Model Of Preventative Healthcare For People With Intellectual Disability

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,244,756.00
    Summary
People with intellectual disability face stark health inequalities, die prematurely from potentially avoidable causes and experience poor access to preventative health care. Access to preventative health care is one of the key pillars of Australia's long-term national health plan. This project will find out why there are gaps in preventative health care for people with intellectual disability, determine how these gaps affect people and develop a new model of health care.

Scheduling Frequent Opportunities For Outdoor Play – A Simple Approach To Increase Physical Activity In Childcare

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $355,955.00
    Summary
Australian preschool aged children are not sufficiently active, increasing their risk of a variety of health conditions. When at childcare, previous research has found that children are particularly activity during the first 10-15 minutes of outdoor play. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of changing the scheduling of periods of outdoor play within preschools.

Using Mathematical Models To Assess The Impact Of Interventions To Reduce Sexually Transmitted Infections In Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $562,276.00
    Summary
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are an increasing public health problem in Australia. Australia's recent National Transmissible Infections Strategy identified chlamydia control, STI prevention in gay men and STIs in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as priority areas. We propose to develop mathematical models of STI transmission and use these to help understand and identify the most cost-effective interventions to reduce the impact of STIs on Australian populations.

Implications Of The Increasing Duration Of Life Spent With Obesity For Population Health

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $251,830.00
    Summary
As the prevalence of obesity at younger ages increases, people are living longer with obesity. We have recently shown that this has an increased risk of mortality and diabetes. In this project we will look at the extent to which an increasing length of time lived with obesity is also associated with increased risks of hypertension, heart disease, cancer, arthritis and disability. We will also look at the effect of this increasing duration on the overall health of Australian adults.

PRECIS: PRecision Evidence For Childhood Obesity Prevention InterventionS

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,280,254.00
    Summary
This project will bring together global knowledge on community-based obesity prevention to identify the most effective and equitable approaches to create healthier communities. The project will support communities to create positive actions that are tailored to their own community characteristics and resources, to prevent childhood obesity now and into the future.
