Monitoring Deliberative Integrity in Australia. The project aims to develop and apply the concept of deliberative integrity as a counterpart to more familiar ideas about electoral integrity in the evaluation of democratic processes. Expected outcomes include a better understanding of how such innovations can and should be designed. Deliberative democracy and climate change: building the foundations of an adaptive system. This project will find mechanisms for improving public debate regarding climate change and the ability to respond to the challenge, as well as the politics surrounding it. It will make recommendations about the approaches needed to transform the issue and at the same time achieve better democratic outcomes.
New Environmental Policy Instruments and Government-Industry Strategies in Queensland. This study will examine the hypothesized benefits of environmental policy instruments such as voluntary agreements, taxes and incentives, which augment or supplant traditional regulatory approaches. It will focus on a State experiencing economic prosperity by exporting resources, and designing new institutional responses to the challenges of creating a sustainable society. Indonesian Democracy: The Politics of Failed Reform and Regime Viability. Despite high hopes following the fall of Indonesia's authoritarian regime, political reform has been limited. The project examines the reasons for slow progress. Among the areas to be studied are constitutional and electoral reform, military reform, judicial reform, decentralisation, preservation of order and economic reform. Summary
The Brazilian National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), foreign policy and the internationalisation of Brazil. This project explores the role of the Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES) in inciting the internationalisation of Brazilian firms and the expansion of Brazil's foreign policy across the global South. It critically examines Brazil's engagement with Bolivia, Paraguay, Angola and Mozambique, asking how Brazil is being received and perceived.
Duties beyond borders: A historical approach to protecting the vulnerable. What, if anything, do states owe to vulnerable people beyond their borders, be they seeking asylum, needing humanitarian assistance, or requiring protection from mass atrocities? This project plans to take a historical approach to answering this question. This project aims to produce a comprehensive empirical study of peace-settlement amnesties and their impact on democracy, human rights and long-term peace in the aftermath of violent con?ict. It combines a large-scale global study of all amnesties included in peace accords from 1980 to 2005 with four case studies drawn from the Asia-Paci?c region: Indonesia/Aceh; Papua New Guinea/Bougainville; East Timor; and the Solomon Islands. This project will examine the political writings of Francesco Guicciardini (1483-1540), aiming to disseminate Guicciardini's political theory in the English-speaking world and establish his importance as one of the great thinkers of the European political tradition. Simultaneously, it will uncover and reassess a number of his highly original theoretical insights, many still relevant today (particularly for contemporary republicanism). Guicciardini's political theory, in sharp contrast to that of his co-citizen and friend Machiavelli, received only limited attention, as his works were published only centuries after his death.
