Summary
I lead a research program on the ethics and politics of pharmaceutical innovation and translation: how medicines are developed, regulated, funded and taken up into practice. I aim to help policymakers to deal with conflicts among stakeholders. Over the next 4 years I will conduct a suite of research projects on topics of immediate significance to Australian policymakers; develop a new framework for pharmaceutical ethics and create a “Pharmaceutical Ethics and Politics Network.”
Ethics and Formal Theories of Decision. The benefits of this project will include improved methods for making ethically-informed decisions in various practical situations. Among the more important applications are legal decisions and conservation management. The theory developed in this project will also help shed light on both the statistical and ethical issues raised in much-debated areas such as racial profiling. Summary
Neuroenhancement is the use of pharmaceuticals and other substances by ñhealthyî people to improve their normal cognitive abilities - for example by improving their attention span, memory or mood. By conducting in-depth interviews with community members this project will explore understandings of, and attitudes towards, neuroenhancement among Australian adults. This information is essential to inform policies, and medical practice, in the use of pharmaceuticals for neuroenhancement purposes.
Designing illicit drug policy solutions: the role of participation. This project aims to study whether the design of illicit drug policies can be enhanced with participation. As a complex social problem, the development of new policy design solutions requires participatory processes which engage multiple stakeholders and make explicit the underlying values and goals. The project aims to study the effects of participatory policy design and generate new innovative technologies of participation. Summary
Regulating the availability of alcohol is one of the most effective ways to reduce harm from alcohol consumption, and local governments have a significant role. This Fellowship provides the first systematic examination of the impact of local government regulation of alcohol availability. The findings can inform Australian planning and licensing policies to help support appropriate regulation of alcohol outlets in order to reduce alcohol-related harm.

Summary
The way the built environment is planned and designed has a pervasive influence on health but how to translate that evidence into policy and practice is under-researched. Recent developments in NSW provide the opportunity to investigate how health is included across the business of a land-use planning system. This translational research uses a realist approach and policy analysis to unpack the influences on health being included (or not) at multiple levels of the system.
