Public law accountability of outsourced government services. When government officials make decisions that affect a person's interests - eg whether to grant a social security payment or visa - the official must act lawfully, fairly and rationally. If they do not, there are means of review and redress for the affected individual via administrative law. But increasingly, government service delivery is outsourced and review mechanisms are lost. This socio-legal project will illuminate the diverse ways in which formal law blocks or encourages the efforts of ordinary citizens to respond to the challenges of reducing our carbon footprint. Justice Reinvestment in Australia: conceptual foundations for criminal justice innovation. This project will examine the characteristics of Justice Reinvestment programs used in other countries which reduce spending on prisons and reinvest the savings in high crime communities to reduce crime and build community services. This study will analyse whether such programs can be developed in the Australian context.

Compliance and enforcement of non-urban water extraction in New South Wales. This project will examine the compliance and enforcement practices of regulators and regulated communities in the water context. Results will provide legal and policy guidance to reshape compliance and enforcement strategies to effectively and efficiently enhance the legitimacy of water law, protect water resources and prevent overuse.

Regulation and governance for the sustainable management of groundwater. This project aims to manage groundwater through analysing six national and international case studies. Groundwater management in Australia confronts a multi-dimensional crisis stemming from neglect, over-allocations and policy mismanagement. Overcoming this will require a transformation in the regulation and governance of groundwater.
