20% of Australian women develop a problem during pregnancy which can cause illness or death of mother or baby. These are linked with poor placental growth and function. This project will identify novel regulators of human and mouse placental development using state-of-the-art molecular and cellular techniques. Summary
Preeclampsia is a common, devastating complication of pregnancy responsible for the loss of countless mothers and babies. There is no medical treatment. Excitingly we have identified 2 medications, safe in pregnancy: metformin and sulfasalazine that may treat this disease. We plan to introduce these medications into the clinic to see whether they may be an effective treatment for preeclampsia. If successful, these medications have the potential to improve the lives of women and babies globally.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy can have devastating effects on the developing baby, causing life-long disease and fetal death. Despite CMV being the most common infectious cause of fetal injury, there are significant gaps in our understanding of this congenital disease and no therapeutics available for use during pregnancy. This study will investigate the genetic molecular mechanisms by which CMV causes fetal injury and develop interventional therapies to reduce disease.

Summary
Babies born prematurely are more likely to experience problems as a result of being born early with males doing worse than females. The mechanisms causing this difference are unknown. The control of blood flow in the placenta and fetus is essential for normal growth and development. This project will investigate the influence of duration of pregnancy, gender, and exposure to antenatal steroids on pathways that control blood flow in the placenta and the newborn in babies born after prematurely.

Summary
Preeclampsia (PE) is a common and potentially life-threatening pregnancy disorder of pregnancy which originates in the early placenta. We will look into new interactions between molecules that determine how early cells establish a functioning placenta. Detection and early treatment of abnormal placental function can prevent PE before serious complications develop.
