Examining the links between obesity and insulin resistance. Obesity prevalence is rapidly increasing in Australia and contributes to the onset of many chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. This project will examine how obesity contributes to disease risk and how modifying nutrient delivery and other interventions that protect from cellular stress reduces these risks.

Does muscle contribute to the maintenance of vitamin D status in winter? This project aims to test the mechanism by which vitamin D status is maintained in winter when input is low. The long half-life in blood of the vitamin D metabolite, 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], maintains an adequate vitamin D status over winter, when sunlight, which produces vitamin D in skin, is reduced. Hyperpolarised gas functional lung and molecular imaging. This project will produce a polariser to generate magnetised gas for research with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This allows imaging of normal and abnormal lung ventilation and circulation in animal and humans. The use of these hyperpolarised gases can also be used to tag specific molecules and increase understanding of lung metabolism.

Summary
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common genetically acquired, life-shortening chronic illness affecting young Australians today. Individuals with CF have a reduced ability to clear mucous from the airways resulting in respiratory infections and inflammation. This project will quantify the biochemical and biophysical properties of mucous in young children with CF to generate novel insights into the pathogenesis of early disease, biomarkers of disease progression and therapeutic targets.
