Physical properties of electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) such as crystal structure, morphology and electrochemical characteristics determine its usefulness in alkaline batteries. However, the relationship between these parameters is not well understood. This APAI project will attempt to address these shortcomings in the current understanding of the production process by focussing on the relationships between fundamental physical, chemical and electrochemical properties of EMD. The results will be of benefit in optimising the process and ensuring that EMD with superior performance can be consistently produced.Read moreRead less
Wave Climate in the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Sea surface roughness has a major influence on global climate modelling. This project will provide a better understanding of the variability of sea waves in coastal waters. Sea surface roughness has a major influence on global climate modelling. This project will provide a better understanding of the variability of sea waves in coastal waters. New technology of HF ocean radar can map wave fields over coastal waters and thus fill a gap between the open ocean satellite measurements and the point measurements from wave buoys. In this project we will improve the analysis of the radar echoes to produce sea wave spectra, and evaluate focussing of waves by complex currents on the continental shelf to help improve wave forecasting in coastal waters. The HF radar will be used to experimentally test current theories of wind wave spreading.Read moreRead less
Hot Rolling Model for Control of Nb Bearing Steels. High strength Nb bearing strip steels are used to reduce the weight of automotive and construction products. The manufacture of these steels is challenging because of difficulties encountered in maintaining constant properties and strip thickness. The aim of the current work is to develop a model for Nb bearing steels that describes the effect of processing conditions and composition on the microstructure evolution during hot rolling. The manufacture of these steels is challenging because of difficulties encountered in maintaining constant properties and strip thickness. The aim of the current work is to develop a model for Nb bearing steels that describes the effect of processing conditions and composition on the microstructure evolution during hot rolling. The model to be developed will incorporate a new approach to describing dynamic recrystallization and will lead to better property and dimensional control. It will also assist in new grade development.Read moreRead less
