Shallow water carbonate sediment dissolution in the global carbon cycle. Carbonate sediment dissolution is a globally significant process, but poorly understood in shallow marine waters. This project will determine whether the combined effect of organic matter, ocean acidification and pore water flow in shallow water carbonate sediments increases the release of calcium and alkalinity to the ocean. This project is significant because this release has not previously been accounted for and may lead ....Shallow water carbonate sediment dissolution in the global carbon cycle. Carbonate sediment dissolution is a globally significant process, but poorly understood in shallow marine waters. This project will determine whether the combined effect of organic matter, ocean acidification and pore water flow in shallow water carbonate sediments increases the release of calcium and alkalinity to the ocean. This project is significant because this release has not previously been accounted for and may lead to an additional uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide into the global ocean, maybe some additional buffering against ocean acidification, but unfortunately, maybe also a loss of carbonate ecosystems. The outcomes of this project will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the global carbon cycle.

Dissolution of CaCO3 in sediments in an acidifying ocean. Dissolution of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in sediments in the context of ocean acidification is poorly understood. This project will use in situ advective benthic chamber incubations and experimental manipulations under future ocean acidification scenarios to determine the controls on the dissolution of CaCO3 in sediments. This project is significant because changes in the dissolution of CaCO3 in sediments in an acidifying ocean are at lea ....Dissolution of CaCO3 in sediments in an acidifying ocean. This project is significant because changes in the dissolution of CaCO3 in sediments in an acidifying ocean are at least as important, and potentially more important, than calcification to the future accretion and survival of carbonate ecosystems. It is expected that outcomes of this project will significantly advance our understanding of the drivers of the dissolution of CaCO3 in sediments and the functioning of globally important carbonate ecosystems.Read moreRead less
Seagrass denitrification: importance for global nitrogen budgets. The objective of this project is to use cutting-edge techniques to measure denitrification rates in communities dominated by different tropical and temperate seagrass species. Denitrification is a globally significant critical ecosystem process, but it is poorly understood in seagrass communities. This project is significant because of the potential importance of seagrass communities for nitrogen loss via denitrification in coasta ....Seagrass denitrification: importance for global nitrogen budgets. Denitrification is a globally significant critical ecosystem process, but it is poorly understood in seagrass communities. This project is significant because of the potential importance of seagrass communities for nitrogen loss via denitrification in coastal systems and the importance of coastal systems in the global nitrogen budget. The expected outcomes of this study may significantly advance our understanding of the functioning of coastal systems and global nitrogen budgets.Read moreRead less
Do cable bacteria reduce nitrogen removal in seasonally anoxic estuaries? The discovery of 'cable bacteria', which can couple redox half reactions centimetres distant from one another by transporting electrons along their filaments, has fundamentally changed the way we view sediment biogeochemistry. This project will investigate the interaction between 'cable bacteria' and enhanced nitrogen recycling in seasonally anoxic estuaries. This project will help improve understanding of how nitrogen is ....Do cable bacteria reduce nitrogen removal in seasonally anoxic estuaries? The discovery of 'cable bacteria', which can couple redox half reactions centimetres distant from one another by transporting electrons along their filaments, has fundamentally changed the way we view sediment biogeochemistry. This project will investigate the interaction between 'cable bacteria' and enhanced nitrogen recycling in seasonally anoxic estuaries. This project will help improve understanding of how nitrogen is retained in seasonally anoxic estuaries which is essential to combatting the problem of eutrophication. In addition the fundamental new understanding of the ecology and biogeochemical processes mediated by 'cable bacteria', may lead to future applications in waste water treatment.Read moreRead less
Resilience in biogeochemical pathways along a catchment-to-coast continuum. Aquatic systems have degraded more in the past 50 years than any other time in history. Global pressures are further threatening their sustainability, but their complexity makes it difficult to understand how they are responding. This project will combine numerous state-of-the-art approaches to unravel pathways that shape their response.
Global Gravitational Wave Astronomy. To listen to the universe with gravitational waves needs a global array of gravitational wave observatories, and one of these must be in the southern hemisphere - in Australia. To listen to the universe with gravitational waves needs a global array of gravitational wave observatories, and one of these must be in the southern hemisphere - in Australia. By definitively answering outstanding questions about an Australian gravitational wave observatory - Where should it be? How sensitive? What astronomy will it aid? - we make the case for the international community to help build this observatory, investing hundreds of millions of dollars in rural Australia and keeping Australia on the cutting edge of all branches of astronomy. As a flagship client of advanced data GRID technologies, we will also shape the growth of Australian knowledge of, and infrastructure for, next-generation communications technologies.Read moreRead less
Can muscles tune foot stiffness to enhance efficiency of human locomotion? This project aims to understand the key role that muscles might play in supporting the arch of the foot and determine if this improves the efficiency of human walking and running. The human foot is known to act like a spring to store and return energy during walking and running. The project hypothesises that this function is enhanced by muscular contributions within the foot that act to tune the stiffness of the foot and ....Can muscles tune foot stiffness to enhance efficiency of human locomotion? This project aims to understand the key role that muscles might play in supporting the arch of the foot and determine if this improves the efficiency of human walking and running. The human foot is known to act like a spring to store and return energy during walking and running. The project hypothesises that this function is enhanced by muscular contributions within the foot that act to tune the stiffness of the foot and maximise efficiency of force production. Exploration of how foot stiffness is controlled during human movement is expected to improve our understanding of the evolution of human walking and running and contribute to improving the design of modern footwear.Read moreRead less
Testing metabolic theories in ecology. There are striking similarities in the way plants and animals take up and use energy (metabolism), despite enormous variation in size and life-style. This project will make the first experimental comparison of the predictions of the two major theories for these broad patterns. The results will significantly progress this controversial and exciting field.

This project aims to address a big challenge in nanophotonics by developing revolutionary methods for efficient chiral sensing of molecules without the need for spectrometry, frequency scanning, or moving mechanical parts, and to enhance chiroptical signals a hundredfold with the help of metasurface structures. Resonant metasurfaces are arrays of engineered dielectric nanoparticles with extraordinary characteristics, and they would allow to overcome current limitations of chiral sensing analytical tools. Detecting chiral molecules in low concentrations is crucially important to many fields of biology, chemistry, and pharmacy, as well as to the food and cosmetics industries, constituting a market of tens of billions of dollars.Read moreRead less
