Summary
Justifying war. This project will develop a comprehensive new account of the ethics of war. Radically departing from the current philosophical orthodoxy in its focus on the distinctively collectivist dimensions of war's morality, it will offer a new take on both the positive reasons that justify warfare and the constraints on starting, fighting and ending wars.
Political normativity and the feasibility requirement. Commonsense says that claims about how social and political life ought to be arranged must not make infeasible demands. This project will investigate this piece of commonsense and explore its implications for a number of pressing issues, such as climate change, multiculturalism, political participation, inequality, historical justice, and the rules of war.
The Ethical Responsibilities of Consumers. This project will explore the responsibilities of individuals with respect to the wrongful harms that occur in producing the goods and services that they consume. It examines the grounds and stringencies of such alleged responsibilities. It develops detailed case studies of three consumer products, coffee, mobile phones, and paper and cardboard, that present consumers with distinct ethical challenges, and evaluates ethical purchasing, consumer boycotts, ....The Ethical Responsibilities of Consumers. This study presents a major theoretical challenge to the individualistic definition of wellbeing that defines mainstream economics. This project will provide the first systematic study of the profound yet hitherto under-appreciated influence of classical Stoicism on the political thought of the European Enlightenment, particularly liberal thought. It will show that the Stoics provided the first properly developed theory of personal rights and were the first to successfully promulgate the values of universalism, impartiality, egalitarianism, tolerance and cosmopolitanism.
