The Aristotelian Soul in Late Ming China. This project aims to uncover a seminal moment during the first stage of Sino-Western intellectual encounters when the Jesuit Francesco Sambiasi (1582-1649) collaborated with the mandarin Xu Guangqi (1562-1633) on the Lingyan lishao (1624), a Chinese translation of Aristotle’s On the Soul. Assimilating Modernity: The Harmonisation of Liberal, Socialist and Conservative Thought in Modern China, 1921-1949. The project will enable Australian policy makers to understand the way in which Chinese intellectuals grappled with the issue of modernity and questions about liberalism, socialism and conservatism in the recent past. This is important because the Chinese elites are tackling similar issues today as they face the challenges of globalisation. This project will be the first comprehensive study of Australia's involvement in the Colombo Plan for aid to South and Southeast Asia. It will examine this involvement as a central part of Australia's engagement with Asia in the postwar period. It will do so under three main headings: Australian foreign policy; cultural diplomacy; and the internationalisation of higher education. It will examine this involvement as a central part of Australia's engagement with Asia in the postwar period. The project will be innovative in bridging the gap between histories of Australian foreign policy and cultural histories of Australian-Asian relations. Antipodean Geology: A Modern History of Southern Hemisphere Earth. This project aims to produce a modern history of the ancient mega-continent Gondwanaland. An international team intends to reorient the history of geosciences towards the southern hemisphere by investigating geologists working in Australasia, South Asia, South America, Southern Africa and Antarctica since 1788. In early modern Europe (circa 1600-1800) there were already anxieties about 'the multitude of books', the expansion of the sciences, and threats to the ideal of a rounded education. The attempted solutions, such as the use of commonplace books, journals, encyclopaedias and library catalogues, emerged as responses duri ....A Cultural History of Information: Lessons from the Enlightenment. This project aims to provide the first comprehensive account of psychiatry in World War Two and its consequences in American, British and Australian contexts. World War Two was a watershed in the theory and practice of psychiatry in the western world, yet it figures less in the literature than the shell shock of World War One and the post-traumatic stress disorder of the Vietnam War. World War Two was a watershed in the theory and practice of psychiatry in the western world, yet it figures less in the literature than the shell shock of World War One and the post-traumatic stress disorder of the Vietnam War. The projects aims to investigate the diverse patient cohorts – such as prisoners of war, veterans and children separated from caregivers – encountered by psychiatrists and the impact of the theories and practices that resulted from these interactions. Talking fish: researching oral history and local knowledge in building community participation in Murray-Darling Basin river rehabilitation. Collecting oral histories of fishing in the Murray-Darling Basin reflects an appreciation of the environmental knowledge of local communities who are on-the-spot custodians of the rivers. Researching everyday fishing will enhance community engagement for river rehabilitation activities, and contribute to international scholarship on inland rivers.
At the Border: Health, Immigration Restriction and the Imagining of Australia, 1901-2001. This project traces and analyses connections between public health policies and immigration policies between 1901 and 2001 in Australia. It interrogates the changing regulation of Australia's population through border control and health screening of aspiring immigrants and citizens, as well as tourists, refugees and illegal entrants. Infectious disease control may well have been a major instrument through which movement over the national borders, and naturalisation into the population, have been governed and policed. The project will illuminate the significance of these interconnecting policies and practices for the historical, legal, and cultural imagining of Australia.
