    Summary
    Serious infections require early effective antibiotic treatment. To provide evidence that an antibiotic will be effective, current tests take 2-5 days and this leads to a reliance on broad spectrum antibiotics, which can cause harm. Our new diagnostic methods, can produce results in 4-6 hours. We will demonstrate the real-world benefit of these methods by assessing samples taken from patients with three high risk infections and compare our test to currently available results.

    Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a form of home dialysis that is both substantially cheaper and associated with better early survival than standard hospital-based haemodialysis. Its use in Australia has been severely limited by poor outcomes compared to the rest of the world. This international study aims to identify “real world” PD centre practices that will lead to better outcomes for Australian patients, greater uptake of home dialysis and health savings of tens of millions of dollars annually.

    Mononuclear phagocytes (MP) are key cells which are now being used to treat various diseases. In Australia, more than 10 million end stage kidney disease(ESKD) patients are treated with chronic dialysis, and more than 20% of them are on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Each PD patient discards more than 20 million MP in dialysate daily. We will explore the possibility of using these MP to treat diseases including transplant rejection.

    Fibrosis (scar tissue) in the abdominal cavity is a common side-effect of peritoneal dialysis (a treatment for kidney failure), and results in a life-threatening loss of dialysis function. The cells causing the fibrosis are uncertain. This project asks: Are inflammatory cells (macrophages) the source of peritoneal scar tissue? What regulates the fibrotic process? Answers may lead to strategies to prevent fibrosis induced by peritoneal dialysis, abdominal surgery or other causes.

    A Clinical And Experimental Study Of The Biomechanical Factors Associated With Tooth Destruction

    This project investigates the influence of biting force on the development of non-carious and carious defects of teeth. Strain gauges will be cemented to the neck region of extracted teeth and teeth in the mouth, forces applied to the biting surfaces of the teeth, and the stress which results will be measured by the strain gauge. A profiling technique and high-power microscopy will be used to determine the amount of tooth structure lost as a result of applying the forces in the presence of acid. .... In addition, a computer model will be generated, to determine whether it can be used to predict the stresses. In a clinical study, patients with and without non-carious defects will be followed for three years in order to assess the morphological changes and measure the volume loss of tooth structure which occurs.
