Summary
Stillbirth is devastating for parents and families. Many stillbirths occur late in pregnancy due to deteriorating health of the baby that can be detected by the mother through a decrease in the baby’s movements. 'My Baby's Movements’ is a personalised, user-controlled and interactive mobile phone tool provided as part of routine care to pregnant women to promote general awareness of their baby’s movements. This trial aims to reduce stillbirth rates by early reporting of decreased movements.
The exposure of infants to adverse events both before and after birth can cause death or permanent disability (eg cerebral palsy) for the infant. Our primary research objective is to minimize the impact and improve outcomes for infants exposed to adverse events before and/or after birth. We will use a multi-disciplinary approach that aims to understand the science and to develop new treatments, thereby representing true “bench to bedside” research.
Investigate the best modern, culturally secure, maternity care for Aboriginal women birthing in an urban maternity setting; evaluate principles for culturally secure maternity services and cultural competence development; advise policy change to promote cultural security; inform national accreditation policies to ensure a culturally competent midwifery workforce; inform literature on cultural competence and cultural security; and translate outcomes to state and national policy/practice.

This proposal addresses agreed targets for closing the gap in Indigenous disadvantage outlined by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in the National Indigenous Reform Agenda. The Aboriginal Families Study will help to determine organisational and service level factors leading to better health outcomes for Aboriginal women and families during and after pregnancy and inform the implementation of COAG funded maternal and child health initiatives in South Australia and nationally

This proposal will develop and test interventions to reform maternity and maternal & child health systems to tackle known inequalities in health and health care for vulnerable families, particularly clients of refugee backgrounds. In 2008 34% of mothers had a caesarean section in Queensland. Women who are fearful are more likely to want and have a surgical delivery. We will recruit and train midwives to provide counselling and education about birth choices to fearful women during pregnancy. Our program (APRIME) enables women to work through fearful elements of childbirth, review their expectations/ experiences and develop a realistic plan. Recent scientific advances provide a window into the developing brain. This research will investigate the profound and challenging ethical questions raised by these new technologies. It will look at scientific and ethical questions relating to the use of new brain scans for fetuses and premature newborn infants. It will develop a resource for parents facing potentially heart-breaking decisions about their seriously ill infants.
