This project aims to improve the performance of programming languages used by millions of Australians every day, such as Java, JavaScript and PHP by developing improved memory-management algorithms. These languages use what is referred to as “garbage collection” to ensure memory is managed without data loss, but do so conservatively and consequently cause performance challenges and energy overheads. This project expects to provide these languages with improved memory-management algorithms, and provides researchers and industry with a framework for innovation. This project will enable safe software that is more efficient on today's hardware and able to exploit emerging hardware. This project should lead to better performance and energy savings for server applications, phones, watches, and smart appliances, while ensuring memory safety.Read moreRead less

In turn, the plan outlines a range of initiatives the FRDC is investing in to achieve these objectives. One of the key needs under the plan is to monitor and evaluate capability and capacity building initiatives to showcase impact, identify lessons and adapt and improve. This proposal outlines First Person Consulting’s (FPC) proposed approach to developing a framework to evaluate the FRDC’s capability and capacity initiatives. Objectives: 1. We understand the key objective of this project is to develop an evaluation framework that can be applied to capability and capacity initiatives to:• showcase impact and change• fulfill FRDC’s performance reporting requirements• identify lessons and insights that can help improve initiatives and investment decisions Read moreRead less
The Intended and Unintended Impact of Policy for Adaptive Policy Management. The project aims to advance knowledge about the intended and unintended consequences of policy on health and well-being. The project aims to advance knowledge about the intended and unintended consequences of policy on health and well-being. It expects to innovate through new methods and novel data to integrate policy evaluation into the policy cycle in a timely fashion to prevent harm from occurring. It also leverages technology to track policy effects in real time. Expected outcomes of this project include new knowledge and enhanced policy infrastructure using new methods and interdisciplinary approaches. Significant benefits include improvements to: (1) policy management by government departments; (2) the health and wellbeing of the Australians they serve; (3) our Partners' capacity to consult governments on how technology can assist policy management. This approach would include: • Development of strategic advice for the industry as a whole • Outline current options available to industry and accreditation pathways • Summarise value to the industry as well as the individual farmer and identify/discuss any limitations. • Understand any existing research limitations in progressing towards accreditation
This work aligns with the objectives of Oysters Australia Strategic Plan- Program1,2 and 4 as well as the FRDC Blue Carbon Report in progressing investigations into opportunities for sustainable and carbon neutral aquaculture Objectives: 1. Provide strategic advice to Oysters Australia - identifying opportunities and associated value for the Australian Oyster Industry in Carbon Neutral Accreditation and Environmental Accounts. 2. Produce communication material for use by Oysters Australia that succinctly communicates opportunities in the carbon neutral and environmental accounting space to growers in an engaging format Read moreRead less

In the international setting, visual psychophysics is playing a major role in this development. The present project will help maintain Australia's international competitiveness in this rapidly growing field. Also, given how important being able to accurately perceive motion is to our ability to safely interact with the world, there are a number of potential applied benefits of the proposed research. These benefits range from areas like road safety to clinical neuropsychology.Read moreRead less
A cross-national study of the relative impact of an oral component on PhD examination quality, language and practice. High quality doctoral degrees call for the most effective forms of assessment. This project investigates the role of oral examination in PhD assessment, common internationally but not in Australia, and is the first to compare the relative impact of oral and 'no oral' models on examination quality, language and practice.

This project falls within the National Research Priority, promoting and maintaining good health, through a healthy start to life and strengthening of social and economic outcomes over the course of life. Fragile X is a group of associated genetic disorders affecting individuals across generations. It is the most common identifiable cause of inherited intellectual disability. About 1 in 4000 males and 1 in 8000 females have Fragile X, but up to 1 in 250 females are carriers. For the first time in Australia, this study will reveal the social and economic impacts on the individual, on their family members who are often the lifelong carers, and on the Australian community, and show how these impacts may be minimised through early intervention.Read moreRead less
Intercultural understanding in primary and secondary schools. What facilitates or impedes intercultural understanding in children, adolescents and schools? How can this be addressed? How can we know what makes a difference? This project answers these questions at the individual, school and national level using a novel cultural systems approach and methodological and technological innovations.
