Cytoskeletal Regulation Of Adhesion Structure And Cell Movement
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$60,420.00
Summary
Metastatic (secondary) cancers are a frequent cause of patient mortality. Central to the development of metastasis is cell motility-movement. A key component of cell movement is the way that cells bind and release the extra-cellular matrix as they move. By understanding how the dynamics of cell interaction with the matrix are regulated, we will identify molecules that are critical to the development of metastatic cancer and thus novel targets for inhibition of metastasis.
Identifying Genetic Risk Factors And Elucidating The Underlying Mechanism(s) Of Parkinsons Disease
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$85,855.00
Summary
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder affecting 1% of people over 65. This innovative research seeks to discover new genetic risk factors that affect disease development. This provides the capability for genetic screening to identify individuals at risk for PD so preventative measures can be employed at an earlier stage. This information will also provide insights as to how the disease occurs and suggest drug targets to improve current partially effective therapy.
Investigating Trans-synaptic Degeneration In The Human Visual Pathway
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$79,514.00
Summary
This research project investigates the spread of neuronal damage along the visual pathway from the retina to higher order areas including the visual cortex and inter-hemispheric tracts. This trans-synaptic degeneration will be examined in Leber's optic atrophy, optic neuritis and glaucoma.
