Advances at the frontiers of subatomic physics and cross-disciplinary applications of the associated techniques. The candidate is an international scientific leader, in terms of his own research, his responsibilities within the United States Department of Energy (DoE) and his role as Chair of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Working Group on International Cooperation in Nuclear Physics. His return to South Australia to establish a major new research centre in the physical sciences will dramatically enhance the State's reputation in science and engineering, an essential component of its contribution to the nation's defence. It will underline Australia's commitment to contribute its share to advancing fundamental science. The involvement of senior researchers from fields as diverse as applied optics and mathematical biology will ensure that the opportunities for cross-disciplinary research are fully exploited.

Fundamental research into physics always leads to unpredictable technological breakthroughs. Fundamental physics research has led to the development of transistors, world wide web, carbon dating, cancer treatments, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, satellites and many applications too numerous to mention. The collaboration will allow Australia access to technologies, research infrastructure, expertise and intellectual knowledge that wouldn't be available otherwise. This will enable Australian institutions to pursue breakthrough science, to develop frontier technologies and to have a great impact in the international scientific community. It will also provide advance training in simulation and high-performance computing to postgraduates and research associates.

In order to test fundamental quantum field theories, which underlie all physical phenomena from galaxy formation to the behaviour of biological system, it is necessary to be able to solve these theories in all regions of interest. In particular, solving theories in the nonperturbative regime has proven a difficult and challenging problem. The most successful theory that we have in physics is perturbative quantum electrodynamics, even though in the nonperturbative regime it is widely believed to be a trivial or pathological theory. We will build on exciting recent successes in this field and use advanced supercomputers to understand the detailed nonperturbative behaviour of quantum electrodynamics.

Complexity is the common frontier in the physical, biological and social sciences. This Network will link specialists in all three sciences through five generic conceptual and mathematical theme activities. It will promote research into how subsystems self-organise into new emergent structures when assembled into an open, non-equilibrium system. Outcomes will include new technologies and software tools and deeper understanding of fundamental questions in science. An essential function of the network will be introducing researchers end users to new tools and broadening the horizons of graduate students.

The fields of nanotechnology, quantum technology and quantum information processing are rapidly converging. This project aims to provide a novel approach in the fundamental understanding of quantum computation/information by using methods inspired by mathematics of evolutionary competition. The project will contribute towards the theoretical foundations of quantum computation by complementing efforts of several groups in Australia collaborating on the experimental design of quantum computers. The outcome of this project will contribute towards the successful operation of quantum computers and will help maintain Australia's position in the global forefront of quantum computation/information.

Development and study of a new theory of gravity. Gravity is thought to be an understood physical phenomena. But recently dramatic discoveries have revealed that major aspects of this phenomenon have been completely missed. This research project will develop and explore implications of these discoveries. At one level this project is about major breakthroughs in fundamental science, but discoveries are revealing space to be a complex dynamic system, and new technologies to detect and exploit this are foreseen. There is some evidence that space is a self-organising information system of a totally new kind, and this will also have applications. At a scientific level these developments will attract considerable international attention and will enthuse younger researchers
