Summary
Australian Panel Data Users Network. Recent years have seen increased concern about how economic, social and technological changes interact with experiences occurring within families, workplaces and communities. Understanding these forces, however, requires panel data that track agents over time. Australia has only recently begun investing heavily in such data, raising concerns about our capacity to capitalize on this investment.

Australia has only recently begun investing heavily in such data, raising concerns about our capacity to capitalize on this investment.
The aims of this network therefore include:
· enhancing the capacity of researchers to undertake panel data research;
· promoting cross-disciplinary research using panel databases;
· facilitating opportunities for contact between panel data researchers; and
· promoting the use of appropriate methods for analysing panel data.

Labour market transitions and dynamics in Australia: An analysis of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey. As stated in the National Research Priorities, 'in the decade ahead, it will be vital to understand and support the drivers for workforce participation and the broader social and economic trends influencing Australian families and communities'. Specifically, the outcomes from this project will result in a richer comprehension of the interaction between the social safety net and economic participation, and especially labour force participation. Very high levels of air pollution kill people. Although air quality is quite good in most Australian cities, the levels of particles are still too high. There are many sources of particles in the air including diesel vehicles and wood fires. There is a National Environment Protection Measure for particles less than 10 thousandths of a millimetre in diameter. However some recent overseas studies have suggested that tiny particles less than 0.1 thousandths of a millimetre might have the greatest e ....Very high levels of air pollution kill people. Although air quality is quite good in most Australian cities, the levels of particles are still too high. There are many sources of particles in the air including diesel vehicles and wood fires. There is a National Environment Protection Measure for particles less than 10 thousandths of a millimetre in diameter. However some recent overseas studies have suggested that tiny particles less than 0.1 thousandths of a millimetre might have the greatest effects on the heart and lungs. We will conduct the first Australian study of the health effects of these tiny particles. Particle counts will be measured in Melbourne by CSIRO using state of the art equipment. Two groups of older subjects will be recruited: patients with chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and patients with heart disease. They will perform regular breathing tests and-or have the electrical activity of their hearts recorded. The recordings will be analysed to detect small variations in heart rate. If we find relationships between particle counts and lung function or heart rate variability, this will provide new evidence of the health effects of air pollution. When the NEPMs are revised, new measures may be required for tiny particles. Particle counts can then be reduced by measures such as better controlling diesel exhaust and more efficient wood stoves.Read moreRead less
Inequality of opportunity in Australia. This project aims to develop econometric approaches for identifying opportunity gaps in Australia and other developed countries. Inequality of opportunity arises when the birth lottery or external factors in later life, rather than personal efforts, determine a person’s chances of economic success. A high level of inequality of opportunity holds people back from realising their potential and from contributing productively to society. Literacy and Numeracy, Schooling, Neighbourhoods and Labour Market Success. The expected outcomes include innovative econometric models and methods that have a wide range of applications, and are particularly suited for empirical problems within large and complex systems. The impact of crime on the mental wellbeing of communities. Considering not only the direct impact of crime on the victims but also the indirect consequences of living in a community with a higher crime rate may in fact lead to a more accurate analysis of the size of the consequences of criminal activities on the society. Further, it may also be the case that the negative externality of crime on non-victims is much larger for some crimes than for others.
