Anti-women online movements: Pathways and patterns of participation . This project aims to understand the influences shaping men’s attraction to anti-women online movements and patterns of participation within them. The project intends to advance sociological research on the endemic problem of anti-women movements advocating violence against women in online environments. Expected outcomes of this project include practical strategies for preventing and reducing participation by men in online movements responsible for the harassment and abuse of women and girls. Epistemologies of workplace change: transforming gender relations in engineering. The severe shortage of engineers threatens sustainable development in rich and poor countries alike. The situation is exacerbated in Australia by global warming and the mining boom, ultimately constraining the national capacity for future economic development and long-term prosperity. Women are potentially an important source of future engineers, but they are currently neither attracted to nor retained within the profession in significant numbers. This project, involving international collaboration, will generate a new conceptual model designed to re-dress this problem. A key outcome will be more efficient and effective gender equity policies in engineering and related industries.

Rates of intergenerational financial support with first home ownership have skyrocketed over the last decade. This project aims to understand how this support is negotiated within families. It will use innovative qualitative methods to identify how this form of financial assistance impacts upon families over time, and from the perspectives of multiple family members. Expected outcomes include a new, systematic framework to recognise how families shape young adults’ pathways into home ownership and to develop evidence-based financial policy. This should provide significant benefits including greater protection for both donors and recipients of financial assistance when purchasing property.

Underemployment and joblessness have emerged as serious social problems in an age of global economic uncertainty. This project focuses on how, across advanced liberal societies, these problems are being redefined via transnational policy models and experiments seeking to 'activate' underemployed and unemployed populations. This project posits that these experiments articulate a new dynamic between economy and society and aims to provide a better understanding of this dynamic. It aims to deliver a reconceptualisation of under- and unemployment, a new and relevant analysis of policy models, and new empirical insight into the mobilisation of activation policies.

Religious fundamentalism is a growing and important part of social change in Muslim countries. Using current religious, political, and social conditions as contrasting environments the proposed research will investigate the competing theories of Islamic fundamentalism, sociological correlates of Muslim religiosity and public influence of religious institutions in contrasting institutional configurations by focusing on the Islamic Republic of Iran, Turkey and Nigeria. This will be achieved through a study of random/purposive samples of respondents in the three countries using survey methodology. The objective is to develop a theoretically and empirically grounded model of social, political and religious trajectories of Muslim societies.
