This project will create an accurate model of the process so pore size can be predicted. This involves novel work in experimental and theoretical methods developed by the Sydney University group. The result will be qualitative and quantitative understanding which can be subsequently used to tailor-make gels for new applications.Read moreRead less

This project will create the enabling science for producing better pressure-sensitive adhesives, leather treatment, bitumen additives and engineering plastics, by the first-ever synthesis of acrylic latex at low temperatures. This will allow certain reaction processes to predominate that will result in molecular architectures that are very different from those currently made. The result will be enhanced material properties, such as better-wearing leather coatings, greater scratch and shock resistance in vehicle and domestic plastics (with reduced environmental insult in manufacture and usage), improved endurance for bitumen road surfaces, and layered packaging that needs less adhesive per unit of strength.Read moreRead less

We aim to measure the spatial variation of fluid speed and particle speed, and of particle concentration, across and along a pipe into which has been introduced a mixture of said particles and fluid. This problem has significance in mechanical and chemical engineering wherever particle/fluid mixtures are flowing. The expected outcomes are recognition of a major contribution to world research, as well as technological applications; one that motivates us is the blood shear in the bearings of a revolutionary Australian blood pump for cardiac assist that avoids both pivots and magnetic suspension for the single moving part.Read moreRead less

This project quantifies the emission of dioxins and biphenyls in burning of treated and contaminated wood to provide data on whether combustion of such materials should be regulated in Australia and whether an educational campaign needs to be mounted to make public aware of this problem. For example, our preliminary results indicate that, timber treated with copper boron azole, a non-arsenic replacement for CCA preservative, produces extremely high levels of dioxins, both in flames and in the ash. If the preliminary results are confirmed, this agent must be disallowed as a wood preservative in Australia, as it poses unacceptable risks to the Australian population and environment.
