Summary
Good health is vital to increase workforce participation,which enables us to pay for rising health care costs. This study will examine how socio-economic, behavioural, environmental and health-related factors impact on healthy workforce participation among older Australians. It will identify ways to prevent people having to retire early because of ill-health and will inform policy makers and health program developers about how best to maintain or increase a healthy workforce participation.
The number of Australians with dementia is increasing and so therefore is the frequency of people with dementia presenting to general practice. There is a recent evidence based clinical practice guideline to inform the diagnosis and management of people with dementia and the support of their carers. Many of the recommendations from this guideline are relevant to Australian general practitioners. Strategies to implement guidelines into practice are needed in all areas of health care, but changing ....The number of Australians with dementia is increasing and so therefore is the frequency of people with dementia presenting to general practice. This project aims to support GPs in improving the general practice based care of people with dementia, and so improve their quality of life. In addition we aim to contribute to the body of knowledge about how to bring about practice change and implement a clinical practice guideline. We plan to design a strategy for implementing this new guideline into practice, working with GPs to change their practice where needed. This Investigator Grant will transform the way follow-up care is delivered to thousands of cancer survivors who have completed treatment by using a shared-care approach between cancer specialists and GPs. This Grant will shift the paradigm of follow-up survivorship care from predominantly acute to primary care by maximising the involvement of GPs and reduce fragmentation of care. This approach is key to enhancing patient-centred care and system sustainability.

The effective and efficient delivery of complex construction projects will be transformed by the increased application of virtual design and construction technologies, including 4D CAD. The Australian Prospective Diabetes Study (APDS) is a 5 year follow-up study established to examine the natural history of diabetes and its complications, as well as heart disease and kidney disease. It is a follow-up to the recently completed AusDiab study and addresses some of the important gaps that exist nationally and internationally in the understanding of the burden of Type 2 diabetes and related problems. AusDiab found that 1 in 4 Australians aged 25 years and over has either diabetes or ....The Australian Prospective Diabetes Study (APDS) is a 5 year follow-up study established to examine the natural history of diabetes and its complications, as well as heart disease and kidney disease. It is a follow-up to the recently completed AusDiab study and addresses some of the important gaps that exist nationally and internationally in the understanding of the burden of Type 2 diabetes and related problems. AusDiab found that 1 in 4 Australians aged 25 years and over has either diabetes or a condition of impaired glucose metabolism (this condition is associated with substantially increased immediate risk of heart disease as well as increased risk of diabetes in the future). This new study-APDS, will be the first Australian and indeed international study of its type. We intend to invite 7000 out of the original 11,247 AusDiab sample to participate. Participants who agree to take part in the follow-up study will be involved in 2 ways: 1. A 6-12 monthly contact with participants by telephone or mail to allow reporting of changes in health and utilisation of health services. 2. A 5 year biomedical follow-up survey. This will involve a survey team travelling around Australia to test the participants for diabetes, heart and kidney disease and cardiovascular risk factors (e.g. blood pressure and cholesterol). It will accurately define how many Australians are likely to develop diabetes (as well as kidney and heart disease) in the future, and who is at highest risk. It is expected that outcomes from this study will provide crucial information for both planning and testing public health policy and for the appropriate allocation of resources including specific treatments of individuals and specific groups with or at risk of Type 2 diabetes and its complications within the Australian population.Read moreRead less

Helping people control their diabetes through the best possible medical care is important. Most people with diabetes eventually need insulin yet this is a step in treatment that is often resisted by patients and GPs. This study will help GPs and Practice Nurses work with patients who have reached this stage make the change to insulin treatment in a safe, effective, convenient and timely way. This will have enormous benefits through reduced diabetes complications and improved quality of life.
