Optimising Medicine Regimens For People With Dementia: Maintaining Function, Maximising Quality Of Life And Preventing Adverse Events

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $715,017.00
    Summary
I am a pharmacist based at Monash University. My expanding research team generates and applies evidence to optimise medicine regimens for people with dementia. My research assesses the risks and benefits of medicines for dementia and other health conditions. I will also focus on research training and capacity building. My research ensures people with dementia and their clinicians are equipped with the best evidence to inform medicines management decisions to optimise health outcomes.

Optimising Pharmaceutical Care For People With Dementia In Acute Care Settings

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $719,637.00
    Summary
Delivering appropriate acute care services for people with dementia is a major healthcare challenge in Australia. People with dementia do not receive appropriate care in hospitals and are more likely to experience worse clinical outcomes compared to people without dementia. This proposal will establish the first large-scale multi-centre cohort of inpatients with dementia, to systematically investigate the impact of hospitalisation on prescribing, clinical and patient-centred outcomes.

The Impact Of Developmental Haemostasis On The Pharmacokinetics And Pharmacodynamics Of Heparin In Children.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $283,676.00
    Summary
Unfractionated Heparin (UFH) is the most commonly used anticoagulant (blood thinning drug) in children. Despite this, the clinical evidence, in terms of reported treatment failures and bleeding complications, suggests the drug is used suboptimally in children compared to adults. This likely relfects the lack of specific studies of UFH in children. This study will, for the first time, define the pharmacokinetics-dynamics of UFH in children, allowing age-specific protocols to be developed. Pharmaco .... Pharmacological modelling of this data will likely have implications for the use of other anticoagulants in children.

Improving Decisions About The Funding Of High Cost Cancer Medicines In Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $569,303.00
    Summary
In this project, we will address the pressing policy question: How can those funding cancer medicines manage the intensifying economic and ethical challenges that they face? Specifically, we will explore ways of making funding decisions fairer and more legitimate in the eyes of different stakeholders, including patients, the general public, governments and pharmaceutical companies. We will also consider ways in which these guidelines might be generalised to the funding of other medicines.

Exploring The Efficacy And Biobehavioural Basis Of Baclofen In The Treatment Of Alcoholic Liver Disease.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $661,197.00
    Summary
Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is the main cause of death from alcohol consumption. Early detection of the disease and subsequent abstinence from alcohol can prevent death and disability. Current medications to help control alcohol consumption are not suitable for use in this patient population owing to the risk of liver side-effects. This study investigates the novel use of an existing medication, baclofen, to safely help maintain abstinence from alcohol in patients suffering from ALD.

Restoration Of Diabetes Associated Cognitive Deficits Through The Modulation Of Cerebrovascular Integrity

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $430,998.00
    Summary
Diabetes is known to increase the risk of dementia. Although the mechanisms are currently unknown, a recently emerging body of evidence suggest that damaged blood vessels of the brain may be central to onset and progress of cognitive dysfunction. Consistently, the dysfunction of brain blood vessels is often observed in the brain of diabetes subjects. Therefore, this project will investigate whether the amelioration of disrupted brain blood vessels restores the cognitive function in diabetes.
