    Targeting Tau Phosphorylation To Treat And Prevent Acquired Epilepsy, Neurodegeneration And Neuropsychiatric Disease Following A Brain Injury

    This project will explore a new approach to the prevention and treatment of epilepsy and the associated mental health disorders following a brain injury. This involves inhibiting pathological forms of the Tau protein, which has been implicated in the development of epilepsy and neurodegeneration. The drug that will be tested in this study has already been demonstrated to be safe and well tolerated in humans, meaning that a positive result from these studies could be expediently translated into c .... However, pharmacological interventions remain limited due to our poor understanding of the neural networks underlying addictive processes. These experiments will explain how the positive rewarding and negative reinforcing aspects of alcohol are transduced within the brain. We believe that our research will facilitate the ability to treat alcoholism at a pharmacological level, enabling the continuation of abstinence or the prevention of relapse, while allowing other factors such as social support structure and coping skills to be developed for each individual, with flow-on social and economic benefits for society as a whole.

    Molecular neurobiology of the GABAB receptor: Studies of heteromeric receptor function and signalling. The G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) for the inhibitory transmitter gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a unique heterodimer. Molecular analyses will be undertaken to provide insights into its signalling mechanisms and functional regulation. Investigations employing point mutant and chimeric receptors will analyse how ligand binding to the extracellular domain of the GABA-BR1 subunit triggers ....
