    Genetic Pathways To Cerebral Palsy

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,314,158.00
    Summary
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a devastating, common developmental brain disorder once assumed to be due to lack of oxygen at birth. Using our unique Biobank with DNA and clinical data from families with a CP child, we are examining the genetic origins of CP and how genes and risk factors in pregnancy contribute. We will use computer modelling and testing in animals and brain cells, to understand causes of CP and devise predictive, preventative and therapeutic strategies.

Inflammatory Pathways For Novel Therapeutic Interventions In Preterm Delivery

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $568,006.00
    Summary
Preterm birth is common and carries severe risks for the child. Existing therapies are not very successful in arresting preterm labour or improving outcomes for the fetus. We have discovered that blocking inflammatory ‘sensor’ molecules can slow labour progression. This project will (1) increase our knowledge of the inflammatory pathways that initiate early labour, and (2) define the mechanism of action and safety of a new drug that has potential for delaying preterm birth in women.

The project aims to link 890,000 population records to place of residence from 1838 to 1930, to examine the relationships between where people live, mortality, life expectancy and health. Where people live impacts their life-course outcomes. The project aims to link 890,000 population records to place of residence from 1838 to 1930, to examine the relationships between where people live, mortality, life expectancy and health. Where people live impacts their life-course outcomes. Using novel matching techniques, the project expects to identify intergenerational changes and the spatial dynamics of inequality and social mobility. Expected outcomes include the creation of a public resource of linked data and a better understanding of long-run health and inequality. These should provide economic and social benefits by informing policy aimed at contemporary social and health challenges, enhancing our understanding of Australian history, and developing public resources.
