Land, Community and Governance in Rural China. Although China is becoming Australia's largest trading partner, we know too little about the control of land in rural China and the implications for the agricultural economy. Facilitating the decline of unsustainable urban infrastructure. Two kinds of process bring sustainable socio-technical practices into the mainstream: those supporting adoption of alternatives (much studied already), and those facilitating decline of superseded practices (seriously neglected so far). This community-based project in the Goulburn Valley focuses on citizens' negotiation of scientific expertise, perceptions of risk and participation in policy formation. It asks: 'how can democracy work in a world of proliferating cultures of expertise?' Bringing Equality Home: A New Gender Agenda. Compared to other countries, Australia has slipped backwards in achieving gender equality and is in danger of falling further behind. This jeopardises opportunities for all Australians and undermines social cohesion and economic progress. This project aims to provide the theoretical and empirical foundations to reverse this trend.
