The Madrid Skylitzes: Electronic reproduction and international interdisciplinary study of the first illustrated history book. With its 574 miniatures, the Madrid Skylitzes is the only known illustrated Greek chronicle (and the sole source for certain periods). But is it Europe's first illustrated history book or copied from a Constantinopolitan original? Isolated studies have produced starkly contradictory answers. Recent cross-disciplinary investigations by an international team have yielded better results. The collaborators will apply the methods of codicology, palaeography, stylistics, art history, historiography, computational linguistics, narratology and intertextuality to elucidate this key cultural product.

Testimonial narratives in the post-colonial era. This project aims to benefit the Australian public by analysing some of the ways testimony has been used as a means of coming to terms with the past in Australia. It aims to amplify the significance of Australian collections, such as the Bringing Them Home Oral History archive at the National Library, both within Australia and internationally, and thereby bring Australian materials and experiences into transnational discussions of testimony and co ....Testimonial narratives in the post-colonial era. This project aims to benefit the Australian public by analysing some of the ways testimony has been used as a means of coming to terms with the past in Australia. It aims to amplify the significance of Australian collections, such as the Bringing Them Home Oral History archive at the National Library, both within Australia and internationally, and thereby bring Australian materials and experiences into transnational discussions of testimony and contested histories. It aims to benefit the research communities in Canada and Australia by providing an interpretative framework for researching and teaching testimonial materials, and by strengthening links between the two countries.Read moreRead less

The project aims to work with two well known research groups in Germany with complimentary expertise to support two applications in this area: analysis of biological sequence data and detection and classification of sequence images, both with a very high significance to research and industry. It is planned to investigate on the diversity and the commonality in both applications leading to better and faster algorithms and their hardware implementations. It is expected to train high quality postgraduates and postdoctoral fellows at Melbourne and the host institutions.Read moreRead less

Previous studies in my group, in conjunction with synthetic and theoretical chemistry groups at the Université de Rennes 1, France, have delineated the properties of a series of complexes containing carbon chains linking two metal centres. Having achieved a partial understanding of the features which result in good electronic communication between the metal centres via the carbon chain, the present proposal seeks to extend this collaboration to further studies which will generate related compounds in which actual eletron exchange can occur, i.e. leading to oxidation/reduction, by using compounds in which two or more different metal centres are present. This may lead to development of nano devices, e.g. molecular-scale switches. If one of the centres is activated by light, a photo-active sensor may result.Read moreRead less

Contaminant Transport in Marine Sediment. Sediments in bays and estuaries are often contaminated. The inorganic contaminants in sediments can be released back into the water body through mass transfer processes. The mass transfer rate is largely controlled by the wave-driven seepage flux across the seabed. Quantification of this flux is thus a key factor in modelling water quality of coastal water bodies. This project aims to: (1) develop models forwave-induced seepage flux within sediments and ....Contaminant Transport in Marine Sediment. Sediments in bays and estuaries are often contaminated. Outcomes of the proposed research will enhance the understanding of the mechanism of contaminant transport in marine sediment.Read moreRead less
Modelling of sand wave migration and its interaction with pipelines. The movement of sand due to sand waves can interfere with marine structures such as pipelines and cables on the seabed. It may also cause free spans of pipelines, with potentially serious consequences. Most previous research has considered sand wave propagation and the stability of pipelines as separate problems. In this project, we propose a coupled analysis of sand wave migration and its interaction with pipelines through mat ....Modelling of sand wave migration and its interaction with pipelines. It may also cause free spans of pipelines, with potentially serious consequences. Most previous research has considered sand wave propagation and the stability of pipelines as separate problems. In this project, we propose a coupled analysis of sand wave migration and its interaction with pipelines through mathematical and numerical modelling. The theoretical work will be supported by laboratory experiments. The resulting research will provide a better understanding of sand wave migration, beach profiles and the stability of pipelines.Read moreRead less
Tidal watertable fluctuation in a sandy ocean beach. Tidal dynamics in a sandy beach is important for erosion, saltwater intrusion and biological activities. Most previous researches were based on linearised shallow flow, ignoring capillary effects and soil behaviour, which are particularly important for a sandy beach. In this project, we propose to establish an analytical approximation for the tidal watertable fluctuation in a sandy beach by incorporate the capillary effects and soil behaviour. ....Tidal watertable fluctuation in a sandy ocean beach.
