Australia has one of the highest proportions of part-time workers of OECD countries. The project aims to investigate, both theoretically and empirically, the determinants of full-time/part-time wage differentials, and of employment status and household formation. This will be done in a new framework that incorporates demand and supply side factors; that explicitly allows for a distribution of productivities across home and market production; and that allows for the augmentation of workplace productivity by investment in human capital. The study will produce new models and empirical results, and contribute to rigorous, informed debate on these important issues.Read moreRead less
Civilisation, Masculinity, and the Body. By considering their relationship to broader Western concerns, this project examines the deep cultural origins of Australian masculinity and national identity. By considering their relationship to broader Western concerns, this project examines the deep cultural origins of Australian masculinity and national identity. Much of the bush myth and the Anzac legend are grounded in assumptions that `true' manhood thrives outside of soft, sedentary and unhealthy cities, either in playing fields, battlefields, or the bush. Since Australia experienced growing anxieties about urban life and emphasized the importance of physical development along with most other Western countries, a project such as this helps situate this national experience within a broader cultural development. This is on the forefront of new scholarship that integrates the Australian experience with global culture.Read moreRead less

Australia is making great efforts to improve the situation in the Melanesian countries of our region through large amounts of development aid. Despite this, economic and social conditions continue to deteriorate. Widespread conflict, violence and the AIDS epidemic are significant factors in this decline. This project will critically examine the programs set up to encourage more constructive behaviour, particularly among men. It will contribute significantly to making Australia's efforts to address these profoundly destabilising problems more effective. The Australian Government recognises that it is strongly in our national interest to bring about an improvement in the wellbeing of our neighbours and friends in the region.Read moreRead less

It evaluates the responses and type(s) of activism by major migrant lobbyists as a potential force for socio-legal change and to what extent they operate beyond national borders. By integrating civil society activism, a novel approach is offered which conceptually combines the analysis of women's needs and concerns when migrating internationally with democratisation processes and the increasing acceptance of global norms, nationally and transnationally.
The publication of a single-authored monograph and a number of journal articles is anticipated.Read moreRead less

Gender, family conflict, and suicide in rural China. The principal outcome of this anthropological study is an understanding of the social and cultural causes of suicide in rural China, achieved through close collaboration with Chinese researchers. The principal outcome of this anthropological study is an understanding of the social and cultural causes of suicide in rural China, achieved through close collaboration with Chinese researchers. This will enhance cross-cultural awareness and build cooperative institutional ties with China, both of which are crucial to Australia's development and security in the region. The project will make a major contribution to a global re-conceptualisation of suicide as a social, as well as a mental health problem, and will raise the profile of Australian institutions in suicide studies, gender studies, anthropology, and Asian studies. Through postgraduate training, the project will also help build much-needed research capacity.Read moreRead less
Work, care, retirement and health: ageing agendas. This project will undertake a gendered analysis of how Australians can retire well, taking account of their key resources (such as work, superannuation, the aged pension, and other assets) and key demands (such as to work longer and to care for others in the context of an ageing population and a more feminised workforce).

Improving responses to sexual violence against children in Papua New Guinea. The project aims to result in improved knowledge and community acknowledgement of sexual violence against children in Papua New Guinea (PNG), and an approach that could be adapted and adopted in other low income, fragile contexts. The project aims to result in improved knowledge and community acknowledgement of sexual violence against children in Papua New Guinea (PNG), and an approach that could be adapted and adopted in other low income, fragile contexts. It is a very significant project because sexual violence against children is a widespread and escalating social problem, with a very limited capacity to respond to reported incidents. Working closely with two specialist services to trial and assess a low-cost approach, the project is expected to result in longer-term support for child survivors and their families, and reduce further victimisation and offending. The potential benefits are multiple and far ranging, in PNG and in the Pacific region more broadly. Read moreRead less

Examining China's premodern demographic history shows that age-specific rates of births and deaths are a crucial element usually missing in reconstructing the local histories needed to refine nationwide generalizations. They also raise unanticipated questions, relating for example to diet, stress, and disease . The extensive data on ?virtuous women? in local gazetteers, never previously utilized, show wide local variations in expectancy of life. The project will determine parts of this spatial pattern, and that of fertility where information is systematic enough. These findings will be interpreted by integrating them with the local histories of women's experiences. Read moreRead less
