This project aims to develop, implement and test a means to determine the potential of any arbitrary design generator to produce a diversity of designs and to utilise that means to control the mass customisation of novel designs. Globalisation of markets has produced the need to be able to mass customise designs that are not simple variants of existing designs. Any improvement in Australia's capacity to provide this service will improve both its internal efficiency and increase its competitiveness in the increasing international marketplace for designing through the production of the basis for a new class of designing tools.Read moreRead less

Application Service Providers (ASPs) are one of the fastest growing classes of e-services and operate on the principle of renting software applications. This project aims to develop prediction techniques to estimate quality of service metrics for ASPs. The efficient prediction of the service levels that can be ensured is challenging given the dynamic nature of the Internet and the semantics of application metrics not being formally defined. The project will result in the development of a prototype system to support prediction of service levels. This system will be accessible to the Australian e-services industry via a web interface.Read moreRead less

This project will set up a virtual organization for tsunami related data analysis using grid technology. Due to geologically remote areas/countries involved the sharing of seismic, tidal and other locally gathered tsunami related information is critical to issuing a warning. In collaboration with Australian and International partners, this project will explore: new avenues of tsunami-related data collection, which are currently not available; new data fusion methods; data sharing strategies; visualisation and analysis methods; and develop sensing methods to gather data on animal behaviours often reported as a possible way of identifying similar disasters.Read moreRead less

This project combines expertise in nonlinear soliton physics and computational sciences in order to provide new insights into the physics of network computation. Our proposal addresses the mathematics and computer modelling underlying nonconscious problem solving. We develop a new template concept, the meta-mode, which embodies the network structure of knowledge and the linking mechanisms, which underpin human creativity. We establish the optimal connectivity distributions to preserve distinct pattern classes yet allow model radical shifts in paradigms, and develop algorithms for autonomous connectivity optimisation. We investigate nonlinear process such as solitons and random Boolean networks as realisations of these principles.Read moreRead less

Processor obsolescence is a serious maintenance problem for long-lived computer control systems in military aircraft and other critical applications. A promising solution is to interpose an emulator program between the original "legacy" software and a replacement processor. Unfortunately, no techniques exist for accurately verifying that this procedure preserves the original system's functional and timing behaviour. A particular challenge is that processor emulations involve both legacy code and new subroutines, written in different programming languages. This project will enable verification of safety and mission-critical emulated systems by devising a multilingual modelling and reasoning formalism, based on program refinement theory.Read moreRead less
